Air India Checked Baggage Rules: Allowances, Fees & Status Perks

Air India checked bag allowances by route and cabin, domestic India weight system, Maharaja Club Silver to Platinum benefits, and overweight fee structure.

Air India Checked Baggage Rules

Air India operates one of the world's most extensive networks, connecting India to destinations across six continents. Whether you are flying a short domestic hop between Mumbai and Delhi or a long-haul journey to New York, understanding Air India's checked baggage policy prevents unexpected fees at the airport. This guide covers every scenario: Economy and Business Class allowances, the difference between piece-system and weight-system routes, Maharaja Club status benefits, and the fee schedule for overweight and oversized bags.

How Air India Structures Its Baggage Policy

Air India applies two distinct baggage systems depending on the route:

  • Piece system — used on international routes to and from the Americas, Europe, Australia, and most long-haul destinations. Each passenger is allowed a defined number of bags, each with a maximum weight per piece.
  • Weight system — used on domestic Indian routes and many intra-Asia routes. The passenger receives a total weight pool (e.g., 15 kg or 25 kg) and can distribute it across bags freely, as long as no single bag exceeds 32 kg.

Knowing which system applies before you pack saves money and stress.

Economy Class Checked Baggage

International Routes — Piece System

On international flights covered by the piece system, Air India Economy passengers are entitled to:

  • 1 bag of up to 23 kg on routes to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa
  • 2 bags of up to 23 kg each on routes to the Americas (USA, Canada, UK) and Europe

Each bag must not exceed 158 cm in total linear dimensions (length plus width plus height combined). Bags that are oversized by linear dimension attract additional fees even if they are within the weight limit.

Domestic India Routes — Weight System

On domestic routes within India, Air India Economy class passengers receive:

  • 15 kg total checked baggage allowance for most domestic Economy fares
  • 25 kg for higher fare buckets on certain routes (check your ticket)

The weight system means you can check one 15 kg bag or split it across two smaller bags, as long as the total does not exceed 15 kg and no single bag exceeds 32 kg in weight or 158 cm in linear size.

Economy Basic / Saver Fares

Air India's promotional Economy Basic and Saver fares sometimes carry reduced baggage allowances. Always confirm the included allowance on your ticket before assuming the standard allocation applies. Some Saver fares on short domestic routes include only 7 kg of checked baggage.

Business Class Checked Baggage

Business Class passengers on Air India enjoy a significantly more generous allowance:

  • 2 bags of up to 32 kg each on international routes (piece system routes)
  • 35 kg total on domestic routes (weight system applies)

The 32 kg per-piece limit is important to note because many other carriers cap Business Class bags at 32 kg per bag — Air India matches this industry standard. However, individual bags must still not exceed 32 kg regardless of the class or total allowance. Items weighing between 32 kg and 45 kg per bag attract an overweight fee rather than outright rejection.

First Class

Air India's First Class cabin (available on select Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 routes) offers:

  • 2 bags of up to 32 kg each — same piece allowance as Business but some routes extend the per-piece limit; confirm on your booking

Maharaja Club Status Benefits

Air India's frequent flyer programme is called Flying Returns, and elite status is branded under the Maharaja Club tier system. Status holders receive complimentary extra baggage in addition to the standard fare allowance.

Silver Tier

  • 1 extra bag (23 kg) on international piece-system routes
  • 5 kg extra on domestic weight-system routes

Gold Tier

  • 1 extra bag (32 kg) on international routes
  • 10 kg extra on domestic routes
  • Priority baggage delivery at destination airports

Platinum Tier

  • 2 extra bags (32 kg each) on international routes
  • 15 kg extra on domestic routes
  • Priority check-in and dedicated baggage carousel access at major Indian airports including IGI Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Mumbai

Maharaja Club status is recognised on codeshare flights operated by Air India partners, but the extra allowance applies only on Air India-operated metal. For codeshare segments flown by another carrier, that carrier's status benefit rules apply.

Star Alliance Status Recognition

Air India joined the Star Alliance network and extends baggage benefits to Star Alliance Gold cardholders:

  • 1 extra bag (23 kg) on Air India-operated flights when the eligible member holds Gold status with any Star Alliance carrier
  • Star Alliance Silver members receive no additional checked baggage beyond their ticketed allowance

If you hold United MileagePlus Gold, Lufthansa Miles & More Senator, or another Star Alliance Gold card, you can claim this benefit even if you are not an Air India Flying Returns member.

Overweight and Oversized Fees

When a checked bag exceeds the permitted weight or dimensions, Air India charges excess baggage fees. These fees vary by route and currency, but the general structure is:

Overweight fees (per bag, per segment):

  • Bags weighing 23–32 kg: approximately USD 50–75 on transatlantic routes, INR 500–1,000 on domestic routes
  • Bags weighing 32–45 kg: approximately USD 100–150 on international routes, INR 1,500–2,500 on domestic routes
  • Bags over 45 kg are not accepted as checked baggage under any circumstances

Oversized fees (per bag, per segment):

  • Bags exceeding 158 cm in linear dimensions: approximately USD 100 on international routes

Excess piece fees:

  • A third bag on routes where only two are included: fees range from USD 100 to USD 200 depending on the route and fare

Air India updates its excess baggage rate cards periodically. Always verify the current fees on the Air India website or by calling their contact centre before travel, as rates published in third-party sources may be out of date.

Special Items

Sports equipment: Bicycles, golf bags, skis, and surfboards are accepted as checked baggage when packed in appropriate protective cases. These are subject to standard oversize fees if they exceed 158 cm in linear dimensions.

Musical instruments: Small instruments that fit within the baggage size limits are accepted. Large instruments such as cellos or double basses must be booked as a separate seat if carried in the cabin.

Strollers and car seats: One pushchair/stroller and one car seat per infant ticket are accepted free of charge in addition to the passenger's normal baggage allowance.

Tips for Air India Passengers

  1. Book extra bags online in advance. Pre-purchased baggage is significantly cheaper than fees paid at the airport check-in counter or, worse, at the gate.
  2. Weigh your bags at home. Airport scales in India sometimes differ slightly from home scales. Build in a 0.5–1 kg buffer.
  3. Document your status card. Maharaja Club and Star Alliance Gold benefits must be linked to your booking. Carry physical or digital proof of status in case the system does not reflect it automatically.
  4. Domestic connections matter. If your itinerary includes a domestic Indian leg connecting to an international Air India flight on a single ticket, the international baggage allowance typically applies through to the final destination. Confirm this at check-in for the entire journey.
  5. Vasuki Code-Share Awareness. On Air India Express operated flights (a subsidiary), the baggage rules differ from mainline Air India. Air India Express is a low-cost carrier with its own fee structure.
