Alaska Airlines Carry-On Rules 2026: Size, Fees & Tips

Alaska allows 1 carry-on (22×14×9 in) + 1 personal item free on every fare, including Saver. No weight limit. Gate sizers enforced.

Alaska Airlines Carry-On Rules 2026: Size, Fees and Tips

Alaska Airlines stands out among US carriers for one key reason: every fare class — including the lowest Saver fare — includes a free overhead carry-on bag. On most US airlines, the cheapest ticket restricts you to an underseat personal item only. Alaska doesn't do that.

Here's what you need to know before you fly.

What You Get: Carry-On Allowance

Every Alaska Airlines passenger, regardless of fare class, is entitled to:

  • One carry-on bag stored in the overhead bin — maximum 22×14×9 inches (56×36×23 cm) including wheels and handles
  • One personal item stored under the seat in front of you

There is no published weight limit for either the carry-on or the personal item.

Saver Fare: Why It Matters

Alaska's Saver fare is the cheapest available fare and it still includes the full carry-on allowance. This is rare. Compare:

  • United Basic Economy: overhead carry-on not allowed, personal item only
  • American Basic Economy: overhead carry-on not allowed
  • Delta Basic Economy: overhead carry-on not allowed
  • Alaska Saver: overhead carry-on included

If you're cost-sensitive and flying a route Alaska serves, this can make the Saver fare genuinely competitive even when the sticker price is slightly higher than a competitor's Basic Economy.

The one genuine downside to Saver: you board later, in the last main groups before standby. On full flights, this increases the chance that overhead bin space near your seat is already taken. More on that below.

Size Rules in Practice

Alaska's 22×14×9 inch limit includes everything — wheels, handles, pockets, compression straps. The bag is measured as it sits, not as the manufacturer states.

Most standard carry-on suitcases (Samsonite, Away, Travelpro, Rimowa) fit within this limit. The limit is more generous than many European carriers. Ryanair's main cabin bag limit is 55×40×20 cm — the 20 cm depth is the tight dimension for many bags; Alaska's equivalent is 23 cm (9 inches), giving more clearance.

Personal Item Dimensions

Alaska recommends personal items fit within approximately 17×13×8 inches. Unlike some airlines, Alaska uses physical gate sizers at many airports and flight attendants do enforce this. A bag that doesn't fit in the sizer will be checked.

Common personal items that pass: laptop bags, small daypacks, large handbags, camera bags, soft duffel bags. A standard 15-inch laptop bag fits comfortably.

Boarding and Overhead Bin Access

Boarding order directly affects whether you get overhead bin space near your seat:

Status / FareBoarding Group
First ClassGroup A (priority)
MVP Gold 75KGroup A
MVP GoldGroup B
MVPGroup C
Main CabinGroups D-E
SaverGroup F (last main group)

MVP Gold and MVP Gold 75K board in Groups A-B, giving them near-guaranteed overhead bin space. Regular Main Cabin boards mid-flight, which is usually fine. Saver passengers boarding in Group F on a full 737 should expect bins near their seat to be taken.

If you're on a Saver fare and the flight is full, consider checking a bag — Alaska's checked bag fees are standard, but avoiding gate-check stress on the day of travel may be worth it.

Gate-Checking and Enforcement

If overhead bins fill up before all passengers board, Alaska will ask passengers to gate-check bags. Gate-checked bags are free and returned at the jet bridge at your destination. This is not a penalty — it's a logistics measure. However, it adds time and removes certainty.

Alaska agents at the gate can and do measure bags at the sizer. Oversized carry-ons that don't fit will be checked and a fee may apply depending on your route and fare.

Mileage Plan Partners: Different Rules Apply

Alaska's Mileage Plan lets you earn miles on partner airlines including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, American Airlines, and others. These airlines have their own carry-on policies that are completely independent of Alaska's rules. When flying a partner airline on an Alaska Mileage Plan ticket, you follow the operating carrier's rules, not Alaska's.

Hawaiian Airlines Integration

Following Alaska's acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, the two carriers are in the process of integrating operations. For now, Hawaiian Airlines flights operate under Hawaiian Airlines' own carry-on rules, not Alaska's. Check the operating airline on your ticket before assuming Alaska's rules apply.

What is Alaska Airlines carry-on size limit?

Alaska Airlines carry-on bags must not exceed 22×14×9 inches (56×36×23 cm) including wheels and handles.
