Carry-On Packing Strategy for Business Class Flights
Business class carry-on limits: Lufthansa 16 kg, BA 23 kg, Qatar 15 kg, Air France 18 kg. Two-bag allowances, priority boarding, what to move from checked.
Carry-On Packing Strategy for Business Class Flights
Flying business class changes the carry-on equation in your favour in nearly every dimension. Higher weight limits, two-bag allowances on some airlines, and guaranteed overhead space through priority boarding mean you can carry things you would otherwise have to check — and check less. The strategy is knowing how to use that allowance intelligently.
Business Class Carry-On Allowances by Airline
| Airline | Business Class Carry-On | Economy Carry-On |
|---|---|---|
| British Airways | 23 kg (1 bag + laptop bag) | 23 kg (but enforced at 1 bag in practice) |
| Air France | 18 kg | 12 kg |
| Lufthansa | 16 kg | 8 kg |
| Qatar Airways | 15 kg | 7 kg |
| Emirates | 12 kg | 7 kg |
| Singapore Airlines | 15 kg | 7 kg |
| Cathay Pacific | 15 kg | 7 kg |
These limits represent the formal allowance per booking class. On many airlines, a small laptop bag or handbag is permitted in addition to the main carry-on, effectively doubling your cabin bag capacity regardless of weight.
What to Move from Checked to Carry-On
The most valuable use of a generous business class allowance is moving high-value or essential items from checked baggage into the cabin.
Electronics. Laptops, tablets, camera bodies, and camera lenses are worth thousands of pounds and are fragile. In the cabin, they stay with you. In checked baggage, they are exposed to baggage handling, temperature extremes, and — in the worst case — loss. Move them to carry-on.
Medications. Business class passengers travelling for extended periods often carry prescription medications that cannot be easily replaced at the destination. Keep a full supply in your carry-on, not a partial amount split between bags.
Jewellery and valuables. A business class allowance easily accommodates a jewellery pouch or document wallet alongside a full wardrobe. Never check items that cannot be claimed on standard checked-bag loss insurance.
Camera equipment. A camera body, two lenses, and spare batteries fit comfortably in a padded camera insert inside a 15 kg carry-on. This is harder to justify in economy; in business class, the weight is available.
Priority Boarding and Overhead Space
Business class priority boarding means you board before the main economy cabin. On wide-body aircraft (Boeing 777, 787, Airbus A350, A380), business class overhead bins are physically located above the business section and are filled only by business passengers.
There is no carry-on gamble in business class. You do not need to rush to the gate, gate-check your bag, or hunt for bin space in a different row. Use this by boarding comfortably and without rushing — you have the space regardless.
Amenity Kits and What Not to Bring
Most long-haul business class flights provide an amenity kit containing:
- Eye mask
- Ear plugs
- Socks or slippers
- Dental kit (toothbrush, toothpaste)
- Moisturiser and lip balm (typically in 20–30 ml sizes)
- Sometimes melatonin gummies or a sleep spray (Qatar, Emirates, Singapore Airlines)
This means you do not need to pack these items. Skip the eye mask, ear plugs, and dental kit from home — the airline provides them. This frees up space and liquid allowance in your toiletries bag.
What the amenity kit does not replace: prescription skincare, medications, your preferred sunscreen, or high-end grooming products you specifically require.
Flat-Bed Sleeping: What You Actually Need
Business class seats on wide-body aircraft convert to fully flat beds — typically 180–190 cm long on major Gulf and European carriers. This removes most of the accessories that economy passengers carry for long-haul comfort.
Skip the neck pillow. The seat provides a full pillow. A travel neck pillow is redundant and takes up space.
Skip the bulky blanket. Airlines provide proper duvets in Lufthansa, Qatar, British Airways, and Singapore Airlines business class. The airline blanket is warmer and larger than any travel blanket.
Bring noise-cancelling headphones. Most airlines provide headphones, but they are over-ear models of varying quality. If you have premium noise-cancelling headphones, bring them — the difference in sleep quality on a 12-hour flight is significant.
Lounge Clothing and On-Board Comfort
Most premium airline lounges (Lufthansa Senator and First Lounge, British Airways Concorde Room, Qatar Al Mourjan, Singapore Airlines SilverKris) do not enforce a strict dress code, but athletic wear, beachwear, and flip-flops are typically discouraged.
A practical outfit for a long-haul business class departure: smart-casual trousers (or tailored joggers), a polo or collared shirt, and clean leather trainers or loafers. This reads as appropriate for the lounge and can be worn for the first leg of the flight before changing into pyjamas.
Most business class cabins on overnight flights issue pyjamas at the seat. You do not need to pack separate sleepwear for overnight flights — though some passengers prefer their own.

Frequently asked questions
Do business class passengers get more carry-on weight than economy?▾
Yes, significantly. Lufthansa business class allows 16 kg, British Airways allows 23 kg, Air France allows 18 kg, Qatar Airways allows 15 kg, and Emirates allows 12 kg. Economy allowances are typically 8–10 kg on the same airlines.
Do business class passengers get two carry-on bags?▾
Some airlines permit two bags in business class. British Airways allows one cabin bag plus one laptop bag or handbag. Lufthansa and Air France allow one cabin bag plus one small personal item. Always check your specific airline's current policy.
Does priority boarding in business class guarantee overhead bin space?▾
Yes, in practice. Business class passengers board first, and overhead bins above business class seats are dedicated to that cabin on wide-body aircraft. You will have guaranteed space unless you board very late.
Can I wear a suit through airport security for a business class flight?▾
Yes, but remove the jacket for the scanner. Suit jackets go in a tray. Wearing a suit jacket on board is optional — most business class passengers change into lounge clothes for sleeping on overnight flights.
Do business class lounges require smart-casual dress?▾
Most premium airline lounges (Lufthansa Senator, British Airways Concorde Room, Qatar Al Mourjan) have informal but smart-casual standards. Athletic wear, flip-flops, and beachwear are typically not permitted. Check lounge rules before packing.
