Carry-On Only for Catania: Ryanair, easyJet, CTA Airport, and Eastern Sicily

Catania carry-on guide: Ryanair and easyJet rules at CTA, Etna hike packing, Taormina, Siracusa day trips, and what to wear in Sicily's black lava city.

Carry-On Only for Catania: Ryanair, easyJet, CTA Airport, and Eastern Sicily

Catania is Sicily's busiest city and one of the Mediterranean's most dramatic destinations. Built from black basalt lava after the 1693 earthquake, the city has baroque palaces, an extraordinary fish market, and Etna — the largest active volcano in Europe — looming to the north. Taormina, Siracusa, and the volcano itself are all reachable in a day. Carry-on only travel here is straightforward — but pack with Etna in mind.

Airline Rules at a Glance

AirlineWeightDimensionsNotes
Ryanair10 kg55 × 40 × 20 cmPriority required for overhead bin
easyJet15 kg56 × 45 × 25 cmMost generous at CTA
Vueling10 kg55 × 40 × 20 cmIncluded in most fare types

Ryanair is the dominant carrier at Catania in summer, operating numerous routes across Europe. Priority is important at CTA in peak season — the airport handles enormous volumes in July and August, and gate bag-checks add real delays. Buy Priority when booking, not at the airport. easyJet's 15 kg allowance is the most relaxed option and is worth choosing if the fares are comparable.

Catania Airport (CTA)

Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) is 7 km south of the city centre — one of the closest major European airports to a city centre. The Alibus shuttle runs every 25 minutes from outside the arrivals hall to Catania Centrale train station, taking about 20 minutes. Taxis are metered and not expensive for such a short journey. The airport has a single main terminal that becomes extremely crowded in summer peak months.

Allow extra time for security in July and August. The airport expanded in recent years but still struggles with peak-season volumes.

What to Pack for Eastern Sicily

Sicily has reliable Mediterranean seasons. Summer is intense; spring and autumn are ideal.

Summer (June–September)

  • Light linen or technical-fabric shirts and dresses
  • Loose breathable trousers (essential for churches and the Etna cable car queue)
  • Hat with brim — Etna's southern slopes and Taormina's hilltop are fully exposed
  • Sunscreen factor 50
  • Windproof jacket — required for Etna, even in August (wind chill at 3,000m)
  • Hiking shoes or trail runners if planning an Etna summit hike
  • Light sandals for city days

Winter (November–March)

  • Warm layers and waterproofs — the north face of Etna has ski runs
  • Warm jacket for Catania evenings (8 to 14°C)
  • Walking shoes with good grip — wet basalt is slippery

Year-round

  • 1 smart-casual outfit for Taormina restaurants
  • Small scarf or shawl for cathedral visits
  • Light day pack for excursions

Catania City

The La Pescheria fish market behind the Cathedral of Sant'Agata runs every morning until lunchtime (closed Sundays). It is one of the most theatrical markets in Europe — swordfish, sea urchins, octopus, and tuna piled high on the black lava slabs. It is primarily a working market, not a tourist attraction, and it is extraordinary.

The city's baroque centre is built entirely in volcanic black-grey basalt. Piazza del Duomo, the Bellini Theatre, and Ursino Castle are within walking distance of each other.

Day Trips from Catania

Mount Etna (40 km north, 1 hour by car or Circumetnea train). Active stratovolcano at 3,357 m. Guided crater hikes depart from the Rifugio Sapienza cable car station. Allow a full day; a guide is required for high-crater access. Book in advance in summer.

Taormina (50 km north, 1.5 hours by train). A hilltop Greek and Roman theatre with Etna as backdrop. Very touristy in summer but the view justifies it. Excellent restaurants.

Siracusa (60 km south, 1.25 hours by train). Ortigia island has a Greek temple embedded in a baroque cathedral and an ancient papyrus river. The mainland archaeological park holds the largest Greek theatre in the ancient world. Full day needed.

Noto (90 km south, 2 hours by train). The definitive baroque town, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in golden limestone. Best visited early morning.

Lava Stone Souvenirs

Catania sells decorative items carved from black volcanic basalt — elephants (the city's symbol), tiles, and ornamental pieces. They are beautiful and extremely heavy. A small decorative elephant weighs 1 to 2 kg. Ship them home or factor the weight in from the start. Do not buy them on the way to the airport.

Airport and Transport Tips

  • Alibus from CTA to Catania Centrale: every 20 to 25 minutes, cheap, reliable.
  • Trains from Catania Centrale serve Siracusa, Taormina-Giardini, and Palermo.
  • Circumetnea railway circles Etna's base — scenic, slower than driving.
  • Book Etna guided hikes via the Etna Nord or Etna Sud guide consortia.
  • Check in online for Ryanair — desk queues at CTA are long in summer.

The Bottom Line

Catania is compact, cheap, and extraordinarily well-placed for eastern Sicily. Pack one windproof layer for Etna regardless of the season — the summit is a different climate from the city below. easyJet's 15 kg makes packing comfortable; Ryanair's Priority at 10 kg covers most trips. Leave room in the bag coming home: resist buying the black lava elephant until you have weighed your bag.

Frequently asked questions

Which airlines serve Catania and what are their carry-on rules?

Ryanair, easyJet, and Vueling are the main carriers at Catania. Ryanair allows 10 kg (55 × 40 × 20 cm) with Priority. easyJet allows 15 kg (56 × 45 × 25 cm). Vueling allows 10 kg. Ryanair dominates the summer schedule at CTA.

What should I pack for hiking on Mount Etna?

Etna hikes require layers even in summer. At the summit crater (3,357m) temperatures can be 15 to 20°C cooler than at sea level, and wind is strong. Pack a windproof jacket, sunglasses, and hiking shoes or trail runners. The volcanic rock is sharp — sandals are not suitable. Sun protection is essential at altitude.

Is Catania airport chaotic in summer?

Yes. Catania Fontanarossa (CTA) is Sicily's busiest airport and handles very heavy summer traffic. Queues at security and passport control can be long in July and August. Arrive at least 2 hours before departure. Ryanair Priority is worthwhile to avoid gate bag-checks.

How long is the train from Catania to Siracusa?

The train from Catania Centrale to Siracusa takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Trains run several times daily. Buy tickets at the station or on the Trenitalia app. Siracusa is a full-day trip — Greek temples, the island of Ortigia, and the archaeological park.

What are lava stone souvenirs and why are they heavy?

Catania's traditional souvenirs are carved from the black basalt lava used to build much of the city. Elephants (the city's symbol), tiles, and decorative items are sold throughout the city. They are very heavy for their size. If you buy any, consider shipping them home rather than trying to fit them in a carry-on.
