Carry-On for Cyprus: Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air Rules
Cyprus is a British favourite — warm from May through October, affordable, and easy to reach from the UK with a 4–5 hour flight. The three carriers that dominate routes are Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air, and their carry-on rules differ significantly. Getting this wrong costs money or bags.
Airline Quick Reference
| Airline | Max Weight | Max Dimensions | Free in Cabin? |
|---|---|---|---|
| easyJet | 15 kg | 56×45×25 cm | Yes (all passengers) |
| Ryanair (Priority) | 10 kg | 55×40×20 cm | Yes (Priority fare/add-on) |
| Ryanair (standard) | 10 kg | 40×20×25 cm (under seat only) | Yes, underseat only |
| Wizz Air (free) | 10 kg | 40×30×20 cm | Yes, underseat only |
| Wizz Air (WIZZ Priority) | 10 kg | 55×40×23 cm | Yes (paid add-on) |
easyJet is the most generous: every passenger gets a full-size cabin bag in the overhead locker at no extra charge. For frequent Cyprus travellers, this is often the decisive factor.
Ryanair requires Priority boarding (included in Plus fares or purchasable separately) to bring a 55×40×20 cm cabin bag overhead. Without it, you get an underseat bag only — the 40×20×25 cm restriction is enforced, and many roller bags will not qualify.
Wizz Air has the strictest free allowance: 40×30×20 cm is small enough that only a compact daypack or personal bag fits. The overhead locker requires a paid WIZZ Priority upgrade. Their weight limit of 10 kg is enforced with scales at some Cyprus routes.
Packing for a Cyprus Beach Holiday
Cyprus runs hot from May through October — daytime temperatures in July and August reach 36–40°C in inland areas. The coastal resorts are slightly cooler with a sea breeze, but you still need minimal, lightweight clothing.
What packs efficiently for Cyprus:
- Linen or cotton T-shirts (dry fast, pack flat)
- 1–2 pairs of shorts or lightweight trousers
- A swimsuit (1–2 is plenty; they dry overnight)
- Sandals or flip-flops for resort areas — wheeled suitcases work fine on resort pavements
- One lightweight layer for air-conditioned restaurants and evening on the seafront
- Reef-safe sunscreen at 100 ml or under (or buy on arrival)
The divided island geography is worth keeping in mind. If you plan to visit the Troodos Mountains for a day trip in cooler months, pack one warm layer. Winter visits (December–February) need a proper jacket, as the mountains see snow and Nicosia gets cold nights.
Airport Tips: LCA and PFO
Larnaca (LCA) is the busier airport and serves most Ryanair and easyJet routes. Security is typically efficient. The duty-free airside is solid — buy any liquids you want after security, in sealed bags, which are treated differently to the 100 ml carry-on liquid rule.
Paphos (PFO) is smaller and calmer. Check-in queues are shorter, but it has fewer airside shops. Both airports have standard EU security rules (100 ml containers in a 1-litre clear bag).
At both airports, Ryanair enforces bag sizing at the gate for non-Priority passengers. If you are on a Ryanair flight without Priority and your underseat bag looks oversized, gate staff will charge you.
Wheels vs Backpack
Cyprus resort areas have smooth pavements — wheels work fine from taxi to hotel. Within the Old Town of Paphos or on beach access paths, a backpack is easier. Most travellers can pack a beach week into a 40 L backpack, which qualifies as carry-on on all three airlines if weight is managed.
Ayia Napa's strip is flat and wide; Paphos's harbour area has some inclines but no cobblestones. Wheels are more practical here than in many European destinations.
Tips
- Book Ryanair Priority or easyJet for the same overhead freedom; Wizz Air is cheapest but demands an upgrade to be usable.
- Wear your bulkiest items (trainers, jeans) on the plane in summer — but you will be warm, so plan accordingly.
- Cyprus pharmacies stock sunscreen, insect repellent, and over-the-counter medications. No need to overpack toiletries.
- British pounds are accepted at some tourist shops (a legacy of the UK sovereign base areas), but the official currency is the Euro — bring Euros or use a card.
- The north (TRNC) uses Turkish Lira. ATMs are available in Kyrenia and Famagusta if you cross.
Bottom Line
For Cyprus, easyJet wins on carry-on generosity. Ryanair is competitive if you buy Priority. Wizz Air requires a paid upgrade to be practical for anything more than a personal bag. A well-packed 40 L backpack or a slim roller under 55×40×20 cm covers a full beach week and keeps you in the overhead locker on any of the three.
Frequently asked questions
Which airline has the most generous carry-on allowance to Cyprus?▾
easyJet allows a 15 kg cabin bag (56×45×25 cm) for all passengers, making it the most generous of the three main carriers to Cyprus. Ryanair allows 10 kg with Priority boarding; without it you get only a small personal bag in the cabin. Wizz Air allows 10 kg but enforces a strict 40×30×20 cm underseat bag for free.
Which Cyprus airport should I fly into?▾
Larnaca (LCA) is the main international airport serving Nicosia, Limassol, and Ayia Napa. Paphos (PFO) is smaller and serves the western resorts including Paphos town and Coral Bay. Most UK charter and budget flights serve both; LCA has more frequency overall.
Can I bring sunscreen in carry-on to Cyprus?▾
Yes, but each container must be 100 ml or under and all containers must fit in a single 1-litre clear zip-lock bag. Buy larger sunscreen bottles at destination — Cyprus pharmacies and supermarkets are well-stocked and prices are reasonable.
Do I need to pack a converter or adapter for Cyprus?▾
Cyprus uses the same Type G three-pin plug as the UK, so British travellers need no adapter. Visitors from mainland Europe or the US will need a UK-style adapter. Voltage is 230V.
Is it possible to cross to Northern Cyprus on a day trip?▾
Yes. EU passport holders and most nationalities can cross from the Republic of Cyprus into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus at pedestrian checkpoints such as Ledra Palace in Nicosia. No special permit is required; your passport is stamped. Day trips are popular and straightforward.
