Carry-On Packing List for Hiroshima: Peace City
Pack carry-on only for Hiroshima. Most travellers arrive by Shinkansen. Tips for the Peace Memorial, Miyajima Island, and the Seto Inland Sea coast.
Carry-On Packing List for Hiroshima: Peace City
Hiroshima is two cities in one. The first is the sombre and important Peace Memorial City — rebuilt from near-total destruction in August 1945, now home to a profound museum and the haunting A-Bomb Dome that stands as the only structure left near the hypocentre. The second is a lively, modern, food-obsessed coastal city with excellent oysters, a distinctive take on okonomiyaki, and the spectacular island of Miyajima just offshore. A visit to Hiroshima carries weight, and it deserves time. This guide covers how to get there, what to pack, and how to plan the two most important days.
Getting to Hiroshima
For most travellers, the Shinkansen is how you arrive. Hiroshima sits on the Sanyo Shinkansen line, and the journey times make it naturally integrated into any Kansai or western Japan itinerary:
- Osaka (Shin-Osaka) to Hiroshima: 45 minutes on the Nozomi
- Kyoto to Hiroshima: approximately 1 hour on the Nozomi
- Tokyo to Hiroshima: approximately 4 hours on the Nozomi (fastest service)
The Shinkansen deposits you at Hiroshima Station, which is walkable or a short tram ride from the Peace Memorial Park.
Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) is a small regional airport served by ANA and JAL from Tokyo Haneda (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes flying time). It is the right choice if you are travelling from Hokkaido or somewhere not well-connected to the Shinkansen network. For everyone else, the bullet train is faster door-to-door.
Airline Carry-On Policies
If you are flying into HIJ:
| Airline | Bag Size | Weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANA (domestic, HIJ) | 55 × 40 × 25 cm | 10 kg | Domestic Japan standard; rarely weighed |
| JAL (domestic, HIJ) | 55 × 40 × 25 cm | 10 kg | Same standard; relaxed enforcement |
| ANA (international) | 55 × 40 × 25 cm | 10 kg | Arriving at Tokyo then Shinkansen is common |
| Peach Aviation | 36 × 56 × 23 cm | 7 kg | If using budget carrier for part of the journey |
Most people combining Hiroshima with a broader Japan itinerary fly internationally into Tokyo, Osaka, or Fukuoka and reach Hiroshima by Shinkansen. If that is your route, the carry-on rules that matter most are those of your long-haul carrier.
Packing for the Climate
Hiroshima sits on the Seto Inland Sea coast, which gives it a milder climate than inland cities like Kyoto or Tokyo.
- Winter (December–February): Rarely snows. Daytime temperatures hover around 5–10°C. A good mid-layer and outer jacket are sufficient.
- Spring (March–May): Mild and pleasant, 15–22°C. Cherry blossoms in late March to early April. Light layers work well.
- Summer (June–September): Hot and humid. Temperatures of 31–35°C are common in July and August. Pack breathable fabrics, multiple shirts, and a compact umbrella.
- Autumn (October–November): One of the best times to visit. Mild, 15–22°C, with changing foliage.
The Peace Memorial Museum and Park
Allow a full morning or afternoon — at minimum two to three hours — for the Peace Memorial Museum. It is one of the most important museums in the world and deserves unhurried attention. The exhibits are detailed, moving, and sometimes difficult. The outdoor Peace Memorial Park and A-Bomb Dome are immediately outside.
What to wear: Dress respectfully. This is not a beach or a theme park. Modest, tidy clothing is appropriate for the gravity of the site. Comfortable walking shoes matter — the park covers significant ground.
There is no strict dress code at the museum itself, but the context calls for thoughtful attire.
Miyajima Island (Itsukushima)
Miyajima is 25 minutes from Hiroshima city by tram to Miyajimaguchi, then a 10-minute ferry crossing. The ferry is included with a JR Pass or payable separately (inexpensive).
The island's floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine is one of Japan's most iconic images — it appears to float in the water at high tide and sits on exposed sand at low tide. Check tide tables if you want the full floating effect. Early morning (before 9 am) or late afternoon (after 3 pm) offer dramatically fewer crowds.
The island also has:
- Freely roaming deer — same situation as Nara. Do not leave bags open or leave food accessible.
- Paths through forest to Mount Misen, reachable by ropeway or on foot (a 2–3 hour hike). Wear grip shoes if hiking.
- Oyster restaurants — Miyajima-area oysters are considered Japan's finest.
For the island day: Comfortable, flat walking shoes. A small daypack for water and a layer. Camera. Everything else can stay in your main bag in a locker at Hiroshima Station.
What to Pack
Essentials
- Comfortable walking shoes (broken-in; you will walk extensively at the Peace Memorial Park, around the city, and on Miyajima)
- Light to medium layers matched to the season
- One compact umbrella
- Respectful attire for the Peace Memorial — this does not mean formal dress, but thoughtful casual
Worth Bringing
- A lightweight bag or daypack for excursions to Miyajima, leaving your main bag in a locker
- An IC card (Suica or ICOCA) preloaded for trams, trains, and buses — Hiroshima has an excellent tram network
- Cash — Hiroshima's covered shopping arcades and market stalls are largely cash-based

Toiletries of all kinds are available at konbini (convenience stores) and pharmacies (Matsumoto Kiyoshi has a branch near Hiroshima Station). Japan's 100V Type A sockets match US plugs directly — European visitors need only a simple plug adapter, not a voltage converter.
Day Trips
Onomichi: One hour east of Hiroshima by local train. A atmospheric canal-side town that is the start of the Shimanami Kaido, Japan's most celebrated cycling route across six islands to Imabari in Shikoku. Rental bikes are available at Onomichi station.
Miyajima is technically a day trip but is so integral to a Hiroshima visit that it deserves a full dedicated day rather than a rushed afternoon.
The Bottom Line
Hiroshima rewards slowness. The Peace Memorial Museum is not somewhere to rush through, and Miyajima is not somewhere to glimpse from the ferry and return. Two days — one for the city and Peace Memorial, one for Miyajima — is the minimum to do justice to both. Pack comfortable shoes, respectful attire, a layer for the ferry crossing, and leave the heavy luggage in a locker. Hiroshima will do the rest.
Rules change — always verify carry-on allowances with your airline before you fly.
Frequently asked questions
How much time do you need in Hiroshima?▾
Two days is ideal. Allow a full morning or afternoon for the Peace Memorial Museum and Park, then a full day for Miyajima Island. The city itself warrants an evening walk and dinner in the covered Hondori shopping arcade.
Should I visit Hiroshima and Kyoto on the same trip?▾
Yes. They are one hour apart by Nozomi Shinkansen. Most Kansai-region trips combine Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima naturally, and the rail journey through western Japan is part of the experience.
What is the best way to get to Hiroshima?▾
By Shinkansen. The Nozomi from Osaka takes 45 minutes, from Kyoto approximately one hour, and from Tokyo around four hours. Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) is served by ANA and JAL from Tokyo Haneda but is less convenient for most itineraries.
Are the deer on Miyajima dangerous?▾
The deer on Miyajima are wild and can be assertive. They will investigate bags and nip at loose straps, maps, and food. Keep food out of sight and do not feed them. The same applies at Nara.
What is Hiroshima okonomiyaki and how is it different from Osaka style?▾
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is built in layers — batter, cabbage, bean sprouts, pork, noodles, and a fried egg — rather than mixed together like Osaka style. It is cooked on a teppan griddle and eaten in dedicated okonomiyaki restaurants on floors stacked with individual griddles.
