Carry-On Packing for İzmir: What to Bring
Pack carry-on only for İzmir, Turkey's cosmopolitan Aegean city. Climate guide, what to wear at Ephesus, and what you can skip on this heat-friendly trip.
İzmir is Turkey's third-largest city and its most openly cosmopolitan — a Aegean port city with a long seafront promenade (the Kordon), a sprawling historic bazaar (Kemeraltı), and a relaxed, outward-looking character that sets it apart from İstanbul's intensity or Ankara's formality. The climate is hot-dry-summer Mediterranean, which is excellent news for carry-on-only travel: the packing list is genuinely light and the temperature rules out heavy clothes almost entirely.
Getting there: İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB)
ADB sits about 18 km south of the city centre, connected by the IZBAN suburban rail line — a cheap and efficient transfer that drops you at Alsancak or Basmane stations in under 30 minutes. The airport handles a significant volume of international summer traffic, with Turkish Airlines and its subsidiary SunExpress (which is a joint venture with Lufthansa) operating year-round routes across Europe and the Middle East.
Seasonal routes from the UK operate on easyJet and Ryanair; check luggage allowances carefully on these. Ryanair's strictest cabin bag rules apply on charter-style leisure routes, and ADB does enforce bag sizing at busy gates in July and August when flights are packed.
Climate: pack for real heat
İzmir summers are seriously hot. July and August regularly hit between 32 and 38°C with strong sunshine and low humidity — it feels dry and intense rather than sticky. The Mediterranean coast UV index reaches 10 or above throughout summer; sunscreen is not optional here.
Winters are mild and wet — temperatures between 8 and 15°C, with rain arriving mostly from November through March. A packable rain jacket and one warm layer cover you comfortably.
The ideal packing scenario is a summer visit where your entire carry-on can be filled with light, breathable clothes and almost nothing else.
What to pack
Clothing:
- Lightweight short-sleeved shirts or blouses (4–5 days of outfits): linen and light cotton breathe best in the heat
- Shorts or light trousers (2–3 pairs)
- One loose layer or lightweight long shirt: doubles as mosque cover and sun protection during midday heat
- Comfortable walking shoes with closed toe and solid grip — essential for Ephesus (more on this below)
- Sandals or slip-on shoes: great for the Kordon, restaurants, and beach cafés
- Swimwear (1–2 sets): the Çeşme beach scene is excellent and just an hour away
Toiletries and health:
- SPF 50 sunscreen: UV is very high from May through September; buy more locally if you run out — Turkish pharmacies are well-stocked
- Aftersun lotion or aloe gel: especially useful for fair-skinned travellers on the first few days
- Lip balm with SPF: often forgotten, always needed in Aegean heat
- Insect repellent: mosquitoes appear at dusk in the warmer months
Electronics: standard Type F power sockets (two-round-pin, same as most of continental Europe). No adapter needed if arriving from mainland Europe; UK and US travellers need a Type F adapter.
Documents: Turkish e-visa required for most nationalities — arrange online before travel, not at the airport.
What to skip
- Heavy denim jeans (too hot, too slow to dry if you hand-wash)
- A large umbrella (a compact fold-up is fine if you visit in spring or autumn, but unnecessary in summer)
- Multiple layers of outerwear — one packable layer covers any evening chill
- A beach towel (Çeşme beach clubs provide them; if you're staying at a hotel, towels are standard)
- Formal attire unless you have specific business meetings — İzmir is a dressed-down city by Turkish standards
The Ephesus shoe problem
This deserves its own heading. Ephesus is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world and an easy day trip from İzmir (about one hour by bus or car from the city). The site covers a large area and requires walking on ancient marble road surfaces that have been polished smooth by 2,000 years of feet — and in summer heat they become almost frictionless for thin-soled shoes. Flip flops and strappy sandals are genuinely dangerous on wet or shaded sections. Pack at least one pair of proper walking shoes with a rubber sole and you will visit Ephesus comfortably; pack only thin sandals and you will spend the trip being careful rather than looking at the ruins.
Bag size recommendation
İzmir in summer is one of the easiest carry-on-only trips you can do. A 40-litre cabin bag handles five to seven days with room to spare for summer clothes. A personal item backpack of 25–30 litres is genuinely sufficient for shorter trips of three to four days if you pack ruthlessly. Avoid overpacking — the heat means you want the least amount of stuff possible.
Three İzmir-specific tips
1. Take the IZBAN train into the city. It costs a fraction of a taxi and is air-conditioned. The transfer to Alsancak station takes around 25 minutes and the line is reliable. Get an Izmirim Kart (reloadable transport card) from the machine at the airport station.
2. Visit Kemeraltı bazaar in the morning. The historic bazaar is enjoyable but genuinely crowded and extremely hot by midday in summer. Mornings before 11 am are cooler, less busy, and the light for photography is better. Wear your walking shoes here too — the lanes are uneven.
3. Pack a light scarf or sarong. A single lightweight scarf takes up almost no space and serves multiple uses: mosque visits, shade from intense midday sun, an impromptu beach cover-up, and a makeshift pillow on the bus back from Ephesus.
Frequently asked questions
What shoes should I bring for visiting Ephesus from İzmir?▾
Wear closed-toe walking shoes with proper support and grip. Ephesus has extensive uneven marble slabs and cobblestones that get very slippery in summer heat — thin sandals or flip flops are genuinely hazardous and will leave your feet bruised and blistered after a few hours.
Do I need modest clothing in İzmir?▾
İzmir is the most secular and relaxed city in Turkey. Beach and casual attire is perfectly acceptable in most areas. However, carry a light loose layer or scarf if you plan to visit mosques or spend time in the Kemeraltı bazaar — covering shoulders and knees is a basic courtesy expected at religious sites.
Which airlines fly to İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport?▾
Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, and SunExpress operate year-round routes to ADB. easyJet and Ryanair both run seasonal routes from the UK during summer. Many charter operators serve İzmir in peak season from across Europe.
Is it worth carrying Turkish Lira or can I use cards in İzmir?▾
Cards are widely accepted in İzmir's restaurants, hotels, and shops. Cash in Turkish Lira is useful for the Kemeraltı bazaar, smaller local eateries, and transport. ATMs are plentiful across the city — withdraw from bank ATMs rather than standalone machines to avoid unfavourable exchange rates.
