Carry-On Packing for Limerick: What to Bring

Packing guide for Limerick, Ireland — Shannon Airport, Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Atlantic weather, and US pre-clearance tips.

Limerick has spent decades working against an unfair reputation. Ireland's third-largest city sits at the mouth of the Shannon Estuary, an hour from the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, and — courtesy of Shannon Airport — one of the most convenient transatlantic entry points in Europe. The city itself rewards exploration: King John's Castle sits on an island in the Shannon, the Hunt Museum holds one of Ireland's finest private art collections, and the Saturday Milk Market is genuinely excellent for local food and craft. Use Limerick as a base and the Wild Atlantic Way opens in every direction.

Getting to Limerick

Shannon Airport (SNN) is 25 km west of Limerick city — about 30 minutes by road. Bus Éireann route 343 runs regularly between Shannon and Limerick Bus Station (around 30 minutes, approximately 8 euros). Taxis from the airport to the city centre cost approximately 30–40 euros.

If you cannot find a suitable flight to Shannon, Cork Airport (ORK) and Dublin Airport (DUB) are 1.5–2 hours away by Bus Éireann or private coach. Dublin has the widest international connections in Ireland.

Airlines at SNN include Ryanair, Aer Lingus, United Airlines (Newark), American Airlines (several US cities), and Delta (seasonal transatlantic routes). Shannon's transatlantic connections make it a strong option for US visitors in particular. Ryanair's standard carry-on policies apply at SNN.

US Pre-Clearance at Shannon

Shannon Airport is one of only a handful of airports globally with US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance facilities. This means US immigration, customs, and security checks are completed in Shannon before you board for the United States. When you land at a US airport, you exit as a domestic passenger — no immigration queues, no customs hall.

If you are flying from Shannon to the US, allow extra time before departure (at least 30 minutes beyond the standard arrival time). Have your passport, completed customs declaration form, and any agricultural declaration ready. The pre-clearance facility has its own security lane separate from the main departures area.

Climate and When to Go

Ireland's west coast has an Atlantic climate — mild, frequently overcast, and unpredictable in every season. This is not a criticism; it is a fact of life that locals handle with complete ease once you have the right clothing.

Summer (June–August): The warmest and lightest months, with temperatures typically between 15°C and 21°C. Occasional warm spells reach 24–26°C. Rain is still possible on any given day — Ireland's average summer includes roughly half the days with some rain. Long daylight hours (sunset near 10 pm in June) are a significant compensation.

Autumn (September–October): Milder temperatures (12–18°C), more rain, and a beautiful quality of light in the countryside. The Burren's limestone plateaus and the Cliffs of Moher are often spectacular on overcast autumn days.

Winter (November–February): Rarely below 5°C thanks to the Gulf Stream, but dark, rainy, and windy. Pack proper waterproofs and expect short days.

Spring (March–May): Variable but often lovely. May is particularly good for wildflowers on the Burren — the limestone pavement blooms with rare species including gentians and orchids.

What to Pack

The Waterproof Jacket

Pack a waterproof jacket without question, regardless of season. This is not optional in Ireland. A lightweight, packable waterproof (the kind that folds into its own chest pocket) takes almost no space and converts a potentially miserable day on the Cliffs of Moher or a Burren walk into a comfortable one. If you only buy one thing for an Ireland trip, this is it.

Layering System

Atlantic Irish weather changes quickly. A base layer, a mid-layer (fleece or light down jacket), and a waterproof outer shell cover all conditions from June through October. In winter, heavier options are needed — but still within carry-on limits if you wear your bulkiest items on the plane.

Three to four tops, two pairs of versatile trousers (one smarter for evenings), and a mid-layer make up the core of a Limerick packing list. Light linen or summer clothes are rarely appropriate — even warm Irish days often have a breeze off the Atlantic.

Waterproof Footwear

Comfortable walking shoes that handle rain and occasional mud are more useful than smart trainers. If you plan to walk the Burren trails or any section of the Cliffs of Moher coastal path, waterproof hiking shoes or boots with ankle support are recommended. Wellies are overkill for city use but useful for farm visits or festival fields.

One Smart Outfit

Limerick's restaurant scene has improved significantly in recent years. The city has several excellent restaurants worth a proper evening out — a smart-casual outfit (a collared shirt or a simple dress) covers this without needing formal attire.

Rain Trousers

Optional for casual visitors, but worthwhile if you plan the Burren or extended Cliffs of Moher walking in shoulder seasons. Lightweight waterproof over-trousers fold to almost nothing.

What to Leave Behind

  • Sunscreen SPF 50: Standard SPF 30 is more than adequate for Irish sun exposure, even in summer. Save the space for another layer.
  • Sandals as your primary footwear: Fine for sunny afternoons in the city, impractical for Ireland's terrain and weather. Pack them only as a secondary option.
  • Multiple formal outfits: Limerick is a working city. Smart-casual is entirely appropriate everywhere.
  • Heavy guidebooks: Download offline maps and guides; Lonely Planet and Bord Fáilte (Tourism Ireland) have excellent free digital resources.

Bag Size Recommendation

A 40-litre carry-on (55×40×20 cm) is the sweet spot for Limerick. Ireland's layering requirements mean you carry slightly more volume than a Mediterranean destination, but because layers compress, a well-packed 40-litre bag handles a week easily. Wear your heaviest items (waterproof jacket, chunky shoes) on the plane to free space.

Ryanair passengers without Priority are limited to the 40×20×25 cm personal bag — this is workable for a short weekend trip with disciplined packing, but tight for a week. Aer Lingus allows a 10 kg cabin bag with most economy fares, which is far more practical.

Three Limerick-Specific Tips

Visit Adare for a perfect half-day. Adare village, 20 minutes south of Limerick by car or bus, is regularly voted Ireland's prettiest village. Thatched cottages line the main street, a medieval friary stands in the grounds of Adare Manor, and the pace of life is the rural Ireland of a hundred postcards. Entry to most of the village is free and the walk along the River Maigue is beautiful.

Time the Cliffs of Moher for early morning. The Cliffs attract over 1.5 million visitors per year — on a summer afternoon, the visitor centre carpark fills and the cliff-top path becomes crowded. Arrive before 9 am to see the cliffs in relative solitude with morning light and Atlantic mist. The 8 km coastal walk from Doolin to the visitor centre is one of Ireland's best short walks.

The Milk Market on Saturdays. Limerick's covered Milk Market operates every Saturday morning and is one of Ireland's best food markets — local cheese, artisan bread, charcuterie, fresh fish, and street food. It opens around 8 am and sells out of the best items by noon. Allow an hour and bring cash for smaller stalls.

Frequently asked questions

Which airport do I use for Limerick?

Shannon Airport (SNN) is 25 km west of Limerick city, about 30 minutes by road. Regular bus services (Bus Éireann route 343) run between Shannon and Limerick city centre. Cork Airport (ORK) and Dublin Airport (DUB) are alternatives, both around 1.5–2 hours from Limerick by bus or car.

What is US pre-clearance at Shannon Airport?

Shannon Airport operates US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance, meaning US immigration and customs are completed in Ireland before you board. When you land in the United States, you arrive as a domestic passenger, avoiding long queues at US airports. You will need your passport and completed customs declaration at Shannon before boarding.

Which airlines fly to Shannon?

Ryanair and Aer Lingus serve SNN with frequent European and domestic routes. United Airlines operates transatlantic service to Newark, American Airlines flies to several US cities, and Delta runs seasonal transatlantic routes. SNN is a major hub for affordable transatlantic travel.

Do I really need a waterproof jacket in summer?

Yes. Ireland's Atlantic climate means rain is possible in any month, including July and August. A lightweight waterproof jacket takes up minimal space and prevents a miserable day on the Cliffs of Moher or the Burren. This is the single most important packing decision for an Ireland trip.

What currency is used in Limerick?

The Euro. Ireland is a eurozone country. Shannon Airport and Limerick city both have ATMs. Card payments are widely accepted in the city, but some rural pubs and farm shops along the Burren may prefer cash.
