Carry-On Only for Lombok: Gili Islands, Rinjani, and 7 kg Rules

Carry-on guide for Lombok. Garuda and Lion Air 7 kg limits, Gili Islands access, Mount Rinjani trekking, and what to wear vs pack for LOP.

Carry-On Only for Lombok: Gili Islands, Rinjani, and 7 kg Rules

Lombok combines two very different travel experiences in one island: the white-sand beaches and clear reefs of the Gili Islands, and the demanding volcanic trek up Mount Rinjani at 3,726 metres. That combination means packing for very different demands in the same carry-on. The 7 kg cabin limit on Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air makes this a proper planning challenge — but it is very achievable with the right approach.

The most common routing to Lombok from Bali is Wings Air from Denpasar (DPS) to Lombok International (LOP) — a 30-minute flight. From Europe, most travellers connect via Jakarta or Bali on Garuda or Lion Air. All three operate a 7 kg cabin limit. Garuda's size restriction (40 × 30 × 20 cm) is notably tighter than the industry norm, so check your bag dimensions specifically against this if flying Garuda.

Beach vs Trek: Splitting Your Packing

Lombok's two main experiences have almost opposite packing needs:

Gili Islands (beach): Minimal clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, and sandals. Lightweight. No cars or motorbikes on the islands, so a soft bag is far easier to carry than a rigid wheeled case.

Rinjani (trekking): Long trousers, moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece or warm mid-layer (temperatures drop sharply above 2,000 m), a waterproof jacket, and sturdy boots. The boots are the big item.

The solution: wear your trekking boots on the plane to and from Lombok. They are the single heaviest and bulkiest item in your kit, and wearing them costs you nothing against your 7 kg allowance. Everything else in your packing list — trek layers, swimwear, casual beach clothes — fits into a 40 L soft-sided bag under 7 kg if you pack deliberately.

What to Pack

Beach essentials:

  • 3 lightweight swimsuits or boardshorts
  • 3–4 quick-dry t-shirts
  • 1 pair of lightweight linen or nylon shorts
  • 1 pair of sandals (doubles as Gili walking shoes — no roads, only sand paths)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen (100 ml or solid stick — standard liquids rule applies)

Trek essentials:

  • 1 pair of long trekking trousers (lightweight, quick-dry)
  • 2 moisture-wicking base layer tops
  • 1 warm mid-layer (thin fleece or lightweight down jacket — this compresses well)
  • 1 waterproof jacket (wear on plane if bulky)
  • Trekking boots — wear on the flight
  • Thin liner gloves (cold at the summit overnight)
  • Headlamp (compact, essential for pre-dawn summit push)

Shared items:

  • Small microfibre towel
  • Basic first aid kit (blister plasters are essential for Rinjani)
  • Dry bag (protects electronics from tropical downpours)

Toiletries Strategy

Mataram (Lombok's largest city) and Senggigi resort area both have pharmacies and small supermarkets stocking toiletries. The Gili Islands have small shops selling sunscreen, insect repellent, and basics at inflated prices — buy on the mainland. Budget-brand toiletries in Indonesia are very cheap.

Bring a small 100 ml liquids bag for the flight and buy full-size products after landing. Insect repellent is important in Lombok — buy a DEET-based product locally rather than packing from home.

Getting Around Lombok

LOP to Gili Islands: Taxi to Teluk Nara (30–45 min), then fast boat to Gili Trawangan (30 min). Boats to all three islands run frequently throughout the day.

Gili Islands transport: No motorised vehicles. Getting around means walking, cycling hired bicycles, or taking a cidomo (horse-drawn cart). A soft carry-on or backpack is far more practical here than a wheeled hard-shell case — cobblestones and sand tracks make wheels useless.

Gili to Rinjani: Return to Lombok mainland by boat, then travel north to Senaru or east to Sembalun (the two main trek starting points). Your guide will arrange transport from the dock if you book a guided trek.

Mount Rinjani Practical Notes

The standard Rinjani trek takes 2–4 days. Independent trekking on Rinjani requires a registered guide — this is a firm Indonesian regulation on the mountain. Guides, porters, and basic camping equipment (tents, cooking equipment) are provided by operators in Senaru and Sembalun. You need your own sleeping bag or a warm liner, and your own personal clothing for the cold at altitude.

Boots are the main item you cannot easily rent in smaller sizes. Wear them on the plane if they are large and heavy. If you are buying boots specifically for this trip, choose lightweight trail runners rather than heavy leather hiking boots — they will fit your carry-on better and are sufficient for Rinjani's well-maintained trails.

Bottom Line

Lombok carry-on only is very manageable when you separate beach and trek packing in your mind. Wear your boots on the plane, pack beach and trek layers together (they overlap more than you expect), and buy sunscreen and insect repellent locally. The 7 kg limit is tight but realistic if you are disciplined about it. A soft 35–40 L bag is the right choice — wheels are pointless on the Gili Islands and a hard case does not fit on fast boats.

Frequently asked questions

What is Garuda Indonesia's carry-on limit to Lombok?

Garuda Indonesia allows 7 kg in the cabin for economy class passengers. The maximum bag size is 40 × 30 × 20 cm, which is smaller than many other airlines. Garuda's cabin bag size rule is enforced on popular routes, so measure your bag carefully before flying.

How do I get from Lombok Airport to the Gili Islands?

From Lombok International Airport (LOP), fast boats to the Gili Islands depart from Teluk Nara or Bangsal harbour. Transfer time from LOP to the harbour is around 30–45 minutes by taxi, followed by a 30-minute fast boat to Gili Trawangan. Total journey is around 60–90 minutes.

Can I rent trekking gear for Mount Rinjani instead of packing it?

Yes. Senaru and Sembalun, the main gateway villages for Rinjani, have gear rental shops offering trekking poles, sleeping bags, and waterproof layers at low prices. Boots are harder to rent in smaller sizes — if your foot is under EU 42, consider bringing your own or buying in Mataram before the trek.

Do I need to dress modestly in Lombok?

Lombok is a majority Muslim island and modest dress is appreciated outside beach resort areas and the Gili Islands. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting villages, markets, and mosques. The Gili Islands are informal and beachwear is the norm on the islands themselves.

Is Wings Air the same as Lion Air for carry-on rules?

Wings Air is a subsidiary of Lion Air operating domestic Indonesian routes including Bali (DPS) to Lombok (LOP). Wings Air applies a 7 kg cabin bag limit. The same baggage policy applies as on Lion Air's own flights — check the weight of your bag before boarding.
