Carry-On Only for Morocco: Pack Smart for Medinas and Mountains
Morocco works beautifully for carry-on travel. The country is warm for most of the year, clothing needs are straightforward, and the souks of Marrakech and Fez are among the best places on earth to buy leather goods, textiles, and jewellery that pack flat and travel well. The main variables: which airline you fly in on, and whether you're visiting the Atlas Mountains where temperatures swing dramatically.
Airline Rules: Know Your Carrier Before You Pack
Morocco is served by three very different types of carriers:
Royal Air Maroc: The national carrier allows 10 kg in the cabin and enforces it with more flexibility than European budget carriers. CMN check-in staff generally don't weigh bags on domestic Moroccan routes. On international routes, the 10 kg limit is the official rule. Royal Air Maroc often upsells checked baggage at booking — the carry-on allowance is included in standard international fares.
Ryanair from UK/Europe: Standard Ryanair rules apply. The base fare includes only a small bag under the seat (40 × 20 × 25 cm). Priority boarding (usually $8–15 when booked in advance) adds a 10 kg cabin bag (55 × 40 × 20 cm). At the gate without Priority, your overhead bag gets checked — potentially for a fee above $50.
easyJet from UK/Europe: One cabin bag (56 × 45 × 25 cm) is included in standard fares. FLEXI and PLUS fares add a checked allowance. easyJet does not restrict carry-on to Priority passengers, making it the simpler budget option for carry-on travellers.
Clothing for Morocco's Contrasting Climates
Morocco has two completely different environments that require different approaches:
Coastal cities and lowland medinas (Marrakech, Casablanca, Essaouira): Summer temperatures reach 35–40°C in Marrakech. Lightweight linen and cotton clothes that cover shoulders and knees are both culturally appropriate and practical in the heat. Marrakech in summer is extremely hot — moisture-wicking fabric under a loose linen overshirt is more comfortable than cotton alone.
Atlas Mountains (Toubkal, Ifrane, Ouarzazate): The High Atlas drops to 5–15°C at altitude, even in summer. If you're trekking or visiting mountain towns, a packable down layer and a wind shell are necessary. In winter, the Atlas gets snow. Pack one versatile mid-layer that handles both medina evenings and mountain mornings.
The one-layer solution: A lightweight merino wool long-sleeved shirt works from cool mountain mornings to warm medina afternoons and is appropriate in mosques and souks. One piece of clothing, multiple contexts.
Modesty Packing for Medinas and Souks
This is not optional and is worth thinking through before you pack:
- Loose trousers (not shorts) for medina streets — linen is ideal, light and airy
- Shoulders covered at all times outside resort areas and beaches
- Women: a lightweight linen shirt or scarf to cover hair when entering active mosques
- Closed-toe sandals or comfortable walking shoes — medina streets are cobbled and often wet
One lightweight scarf (70 × 180 cm, under 100 g) solves the hair-covering situation at mosques and doubles as shade on hot days.
Sunscreen
Morocco's sun is strong — UV index reaches 10–11 in summer. Sunscreen is a liquid and must be within 100 ml for carry-on. Options:
- One 100 ml SPF 50 travel tube in your liquids bag
- Solid sunscreen stick (not classified as liquid, no restriction)
- Buy sunscreen at a Marjane or Label'Vie supermarket after landing (cheaper than at home)
Souvenirs That Pack Flat
Morocco produces some of the world's best packable souvenirs:
Leather goods: A leather pouch, clutch, or small bag from the Fez or Marrakech tanneries folds completely flat. High quality, light weight, packs in the bottom of your carry-on.
Scarves and textiles: Berber wool scarves and cotton kaftans are thin and light. They compress to almost nothing.
Dried spices: Ras el hanout, saffron (particularly from Taliouine, the world's best), cumin, and paprika are permitted in carry-on. Pack them in sealed zip bags. A good spice haul adds almost no weight and no liquid complications.
Ceramics: Genuine Moroccan ceramics from Fez are beautiful and entirely non-packable in carry-on without serious risk. Either check them, wrap them extremely well in clothing, or use a shipping service from the medina. Several vendors in Fez offer international shipping directly to buyers.
Casablanca and Marrakech Airport Tips
Casablanca CMN: Mohammed V International is Morocco's main hub and the most professional airport in the country. Security moves efficiently. The terminal is modern. Allow 90 minutes before international departures.
Marrakech RAK: Menara Airport is smaller and can get very busy on European charter and budget airline peak days. Early morning departures to Europe are busiest. Allow extra time on school holiday weekends when easyJet and Ryanair charters stack up.
Frequently asked questions
What is Royal Air Maroc's carry-on weight limit?▾
Royal Air Maroc allows 10 kg in the cabin (55 × 35 × 25 cm) on most fares, plus a personal item. Enforcement at Casablanca CMN is generally lenient compared to European budget carriers, but the official limit is 10 kg. Business class passengers receive a 16 kg carry-on allowance.
Do Ryanair and easyJet rules apply on routes to Morocco?▾
Yes, completely. Ryanair and easyJet flights from the UK and Europe to Marrakech, Casablanca, Fez, and Agadir operate under the same carry-on rules as any European route. Ryanair's base fare allows only a small underseat bag — you must pay extra for Priority boarding to bring an overhead bag. easyJet allows one cabin bag (56 × 45 × 25 cm) on standard fares.
What clothing is appropriate for Moroccan medinas?▾
Morocco's medinas and souks are conservative environments. Cover your shoulders and knees — loose-fitting linen trousers and long-sleeved shirts work well and keep you cool in the heat. Women will experience less attention from touts when dressed modestly. Swimwear and shorts are fine at resort pools and coastal beaches but not in medina streets or mosques.
Can I bring dried spices from Morocco in my carry-on?▾
Yes. Dried spices — ras el hanout, cumin, paprika, saffron, cinnamon sticks — are permitted in carry-on and checked luggage by TSA, UK Border Force, and EU customs. The key distinction is dried vs fresh or plant-based with soil. Pack spices in sealed bags inside your carry-on. Saffron is particularly valuable by weight and travels well.
How does Casablanca CMN airport security compare to European airports?▾
Casablanca Mohammed V International (CMN) security is professional and moves at a reasonable pace. The process is standard — liquids in a clear bag, laptops out, shoes through the scanner. Allow 60–90 minutes before international departure. Marrakech Menara (RAK) is a smaller airport and typically faster during off-peak hours.
