Carry-On Packing for Rennes: What to Bring

Pack smart for Rennes, Brittany's capital: oceanic weather means a rain jacket is essential. Covers climate, cobblestone shoes, festival packing, and airlines.

Rennes is Brittany's capital and one of France's most characterful mid-sized cities: a dense medieval quarter of half-timbered buildings, the grand 17th-century Parlement de Bretagne, and one of the best Saturday markets in the country at Marché des Lices. Most visitors arrive not by plane but by TGV from Paris Montparnasse — just 1 hour 30 minutes — which makes carry-on-only travel the obvious choice.

Rennes Bretagne Airport (RNS) does operate international flights via Air France and Volotea, but the route network is limited. If you are flying in from outside France, check connections carefully. Either way, the packing logic is the same: Rennes has an oceanic climate, and you will encounter rain.

Climate and What to Expect by Season

Brittany is famous — affectionately and otherwise — for its weather. Rennes sits inland from the coast, which moderates the Atlantic exposure slightly, but the oceanic character remains: frequent rain, mild temperatures year-round, and very little of the extreme heat that southern France experiences in summer.

Summer (June–August): Temperatures sit between 18°C and 25°C on most days, occasionally reaching 28–30°C during heat waves. Sunshine is possible but never guaranteed. Light layers and a rain jacket cover most eventualities.

Autumn (September–October): Some of the most pleasant weather of the year — warm enough for light clothing but cool enough to avoid crowds. Rain picks up through October.

Winter (November–February): Mild by the standards of continental Europe, rarely dropping below 3–4°C, but grey and wet. A mid-weight waterproof jacket and a wool layer are your core kit.

Spring (March–May): Variable and showery, with increasing daylight and occasional warm spells. Layer up and keep a rain jacket accessible.

There is no season when you can safely leave a rain jacket behind.

What to Pack

Clothing

Rennes rewards versatile layering over bulky single-purpose items. The city is casual in dress code — Breton culture leans towards practical, unpretentious clothing. A Breton-striped marinière (the classic Breton top) is both culturally appropriate and extremely packable.

For a 3–4 day trip at any time of year, plan on: two or three tops, one lightweight mid-layer (a merino wool jumper or thin fleece packs small and dries quickly), one pair of versatile trousers or jeans, and one pair of warmer trousers or leggings in winter. In summer, you can swap one pair of trousers for lightweight chinos or travel trousers. The key principle is that every item should work with every other item.

Rain jacket

This is not optional. A compact, packable waterproof jacket — ideally with a hood — is the single most important item in your bag. Rennes showers can arrive at any time. A jacket that stuffs into its own pocket takes up minimal bag space and pays dividends daily.

Shoes

The Vieux-Rennes quarter — the historic centre around Place Sainte-Anne and Rue Saint-Michel — is built on cobblestones that become slippery when wet. Choose footwear with grip and waterproofing. Leather ankle boots with a rubber sole are excellent for autumn and winter; lightweight waterproof trainers or hiking shoes work well in warmer months. Avoid smooth leather soles, white canvas, or anything you would be upset to get muddy.

Toiletries

Standard carry-on rules apply: liquids under 100 ml in a clear bag. Rennes has a well-stocked city centre with pharmacies and supermarkets on and around Place de la République. Full-size items are easy to buy on arrival.

Electronics

France uses Type E/F sockets at 230 V. One compact travel adapter is sufficient. Rennes has good public transport — bus and metro — and the city centre is very walkable.

What to Leave Behind

Umbrellas: A packable rain jacket is more useful than an umbrella on a windy Brittany day, and takes up far less space. Leave the full-size umbrella at home.

Heavy summer wardrobe: If you are expecting the warm dry weather of southern France, recalibrate. Rennes summers are pleasant but not Mediterranean. Linen dresses and sandals are possible in July and August, but bring a layer and a rain jacket regardless.

Formal evening wear: Rennes' restaurant scene is excellent — particularly for galettes, crêpes, and local cider in the many crêperies around Place Sainte-Anne — but the dress code is casual. Smart-casual is the ceiling for almost any evening out.

Bag Size Recommendation

A 35–40 litre cabin bag handles a week in Rennes at any time of year. For shorter trips of 2–4 days, 20–25 litres is plenty. If flying with Air France on a full-fare ticket, their cabin bag allowance is generous (55 x 35 x 25 cm). Volotea's allowance varies by fare type — check before you travel. If taking the TGV from Paris, bag size is not restricted in the way it is on aircraft, giving you more flexibility.

Three Rennes-Specific Packing Tips

1. Pack a compact rain jacket, not an umbrella. Breton wind makes umbrellas impractical — they turn inside out, pull you off-course on cobblestones, and take up valuable bag space. A hood and a waterproof layer is the local approach.

2. If you are attending the Festival de la Route du Rock in August, pack earplugs. Rennes hosts one of France's most respected indie and alternative music festivals each August. Venues vary between outdoor stages and indoor clubs with powerful sound systems. Small foam earplugs weigh nothing and protect your hearing without diminishing the experience.

3. Wear your heaviest shoes on the plane. Waterproof walking boots or ankle boots are bulky to pack. Wear them for the journey and save the space in your bag for clothing you cannot layer onto your body.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct flight to Rennes from the UK?

Rennes Bretagne Airport (RNS) has limited international routes. Most visitors from outside France take a TGV from Paris Montparnasse, which takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. Air France and Volotea serve RNS from select European cities.

How rainy is Rennes?

Rennes averages around 700 mm of rainfall per year, spread across most months. Rain tends to come in short showers rather than all-day downpours, but you should assume some rain on any given day and pack accordingly.

What shoes are best for Rennes?

Waterproof walking shoes or ankle boots are ideal. The Vieux-Rennes quarter is paved with slippery cobblestones that get particularly treacherous in the rain. Avoid smooth-soled shoes or heeled boots.
