Carry-On for Turkey: Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, and Istanbul Airports
Turkey offers an extraordinary range of travel experiences within one country: the grandeur of Istanbul, the Aegean coast at Bodrum and Izmir, the Mediterranean resort strip at Antalya, Cappadocia's volcanic landscape, and ancient sites at Ephesus and Pamukkale. Carry-on-only travel works well here — with a few specific things to get right.
Airline Rules: Turkish Airlines vs Pegasus
Turkish Airlines is Turkey's flagship carrier with the more generous carry-on policy: 8 kg cabin bag (55 × 40 × 23 cm) plus a personal item up to 4 kg. At Istanbul Airport (IST), Turkish Airlines is notably lenient with international passengers — moderately oversized or overweight bags frequently pass without comment. This is not a guarantee, but experienced travellers to Turkey often note less enforcement than the stated rules suggest.
Pegasus Airlines is the main budget alternative, serving domestic routes and European destinations from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Pegasus allows an 8 kg carry-on (56 × 46 × 25 cm) — slightly larger dimensions than Turkish Airlines — but enforces its rules more consistently. If your itinerary includes a Pegasus domestic leg (Istanbul to Antalya or Bodrum, for example), pack to the 8 kg limit.
SunExpress (a joint venture between Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa) serves coastal airports from Germany and Austria. Cabin bag allowance is 8 kg — verify current rules when booking.
Istanbul Airport (IST): Big but Efficient
Istanbul's new airport opened in 2019 and is now one of Europe's busiest. It is genuinely enormous — allow time to walk between gates. Security benefits from modern CT scanners at many lanes, which means you don't always need to remove laptops and liquids from your bag, though rules can change.
Allow plenty of time for connections at IST. The terminal is efficient for its size, but distances are large and immigration queues for arriving international passengers can be long during peak periods.
Sabiha Gökçen (SAW): The Asian-Side Alternative
Sabiha Gökçen serves the Asian side of Istanbul and is used by Pegasus and some charter operators. It's smaller and more straightforward than IST but getting there from the European side — where most hotels are — takes an hour or more by road or ferry connection, sometimes significantly longer in traffic.
If your flight departs from SAW, factor the crossing time into your schedule. Missing a Pegasus flight from SAW because of traffic on the Bosphorus crossing is a preventable problem.
Mosque Packing: The Scarf Is Non-Negotiable
Turkey has some of the world's most significant mosques — the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, the Ulu Camii in Bursa. All require covered shoulders and knees for both men and women, and women must cover their hair with a scarf.
The Blue Mosque provides loaners at the entrance, but quality is inconsistent. A lightweight cotton or silk scarf weighs almost nothing, takes minimal space, and solves the dress code at every mosque visit. Pack one.
For men, lightweight linen trousers that cover the knee replace shorts for mosque visits and are cooler than jeans in Turkish summer heat.
Coastal Turkey: Antalya and Bodrum
Antalya and Bodrum are resort destinations with a beach-holiday character: swimwear, light clothing, and sandals dominate. Turkish resort areas have well-stocked supermarkets and pharmacies — Migros, CarrefourSA, and A101 stores are common near coastal tourist areas. Sunscreen, insect repellent, shampoo, and beach gear are widely available.
Sunscreen is expensive by Turkish standards compared to other beach toiletries — bring a full 100 ml travel tube through security and buy more on arrival.
The Peshtemal: Your Carry-On Beach Towel
A traditional Turkish flat-woven cotton bath towel (peshtemal) is one of the best carry-on investments for travelling Turkey. Available throughout the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, at coastal markets in Bodrum and Antalya, and in airport shops, a peshtemal:
- Dries in 20–30 minutes in summer heat
- Folds to roughly the size of a T-shirt
- Works as a beach towel, hammam towel, wrap, or light blanket
- Costs roughly $10–25 depending on quality and location
Buy one on arrival rather than packing a regular towel from home — it saves 600–900 g and you get to choose a design you actually like.
Liquids at Turkish Airports
Turkish airports follow the same 100 ml rule as EU airports. Security is thorough — remove laptops and follow instructions from staff, even if CT lanes are available.
Frequently asked questions
What is Turkish Airlines' carry-on allowance in economy?▾
Turkish Airlines economy class allows one carry-on bag up to 8 kg with maximum dimensions of 55 × 40 × 23 cm, plus one personal item under 4 kg. The airline is generally lenient at Istanbul Airport (IST) on international routes, but the limit is stated policy and can be enforced.
What is Pegasus Airlines' carry-on size and weight limit?▾
Pegasus Airlines allows one cabin bag up to 8 kg with maximum dimensions of 56 × 46 × 25 cm. Pegasus is a Turkish budget carrier with competitive domestic routes — it serves many Turkish coastal destinations from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) and enforces its cabin rules more consistently than Turkish Airlines.
What is the difference between Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)?▾
IST (Istanbul Airport) is on the European side of the city — large, modern, and the main international hub. SAW (Sabiha Gökçen) is on the Asian side — smaller, used mainly by Pegasus and budget carriers for domestic and some international routes. Getting between them takes 1–2 hours depending on traffic.
What should women pack for visiting mosques in Turkey?▾
Women need a scarf to cover their hair when entering mosques. Shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women. A lightweight long scarf serves as head covering and shoulder cover — pack one in your carry-on. Many mosques including the Blue Mosque provide loaner coverings, but quality varies.
What is a Turkish peshtemal and why is it ideal for carry-on travel?▾
A peshtemal is a traditional Turkish flat-woven cotton towel used in hammams and on beaches. It dries in 20–30 minutes, folds to a fraction of the size of a regular towel, and works as a beach towel, blanket, or wrap. Buy one in a Grand Bazaar store or coastal market — it's the perfect carry-on travel towel.
