Carry-On Rules for Spain and Portugal: Complete Guide

The Iberian Peninsula is one of Europe's most popular travel regions, served by a full spectrum of carriers from full-service flag carriers to some of the continent's most restrictive budget airlines. Understanding which airline you are flying — and which terminal you are using — makes a significant difference.

Iberia

Iberia is Spain's flag carrier and a Oneworld alliance member.

Economy: one carry-on bag up to 56x45x25 cm and 10 kg, plus one personal item.

Business: one carry-on bag up to 10 kg with more flexible dimensions.

The 10 kg cabin bag allowance is genuinely generous for a European short-haul carrier. Iberia also applies Oneworld status benefits consistently, so emerald and sapphire tier passengers receive priority boarding and additional allowances. The 56x45x25 cm dimensions are slightly larger than the standard 55x40x23 cm, which means even slightly oversized bags often pass without issue.

Iberia Express

Iberia Express is the low-cost subsidiary of the Iberia Group, operating primarily domestic and short-haul European routes.

Economy: one carry-on bag up to 10 kg and 56x45x25 cm, matching Iberia's main airline policy.

Basic (Economy Light) fare: this is the restricted tier. Basic fare passengers receive only a personal item under the seat, no overhead locker bag. The upgrade to carry-on access costs extra.

Vueling

Vueling is another IAG (Iberia's parent group) low-cost carrier with an extensive Spanish domestic and European network.

Optima fare and above: one carry-on bag up to 55x40x20 cm and 10 kg.

Lite (base) fare: personal item under the seat only, no cabin bag. This is a common booking trap for travellers who default to cheapest fares. The fee to add carry-on at booking is significantly less than at the airport.

Note that Vueling's 20 cm depth limit is the tightest of the Spanish carriers. A bag that fits Iberia may technically exceed Vueling's depth allowance — worth checking if your bag is close to 25 cm deep.

TAP Portugal

TAP Air Portugal is the flag carrier of Portugal and a Star Alliance member.

Economy: one carry-on bag up to 55x40x20 cm and 8 kg, plus one personal item.

Business: one carry-on bag up to 10 kg.

TAP's 20 cm depth limit is notably narrower than the 23-25 cm allowed by most European carriers. Many standard roller carry-ons are exactly 23 cm deep and will technically exceed TAP's allowance. In practice, enforcement depends on the route and load factor, but be aware of the dimension and measure your bag before flying TAP.

Star Alliance Gold members receive enhanced allowances and may carry an additional piece.

Air Europa

Air Europa is a Skyteam member operating from Madrid as a primary hub, with routes to the Americas, Europe, and North Africa.

Economy: one carry-on bag up to 55x40x20 cm and 10 kg, plus one personal item up to 35x20x20 cm.

Like TAP and Vueling, the 20 cm depth limit applies. Air Europa is known to enforce carry-on rules more consistently on transatlantic routes than on short European hops.

SATA Azores Airlines

SATA operates routes from the Azores to mainland Portugal. One carry-on bag up to 10 kg and 55x40x20 cm. Inter-island hops use small aircraft with limited overhead space — a soft bag under 6 kg is the safest choice for island connections.

Budget Airlines in Spain and Portugal

Budget airlines dominate short-haul routes across the Iberian Peninsula, and their policies differ from the full-service carriers above.

Ryanair is the single largest carrier by routes in Spain and Portugal. Its standard policy applies: non-priority passengers are limited to a 40x20x25 cm under-seat bag. Priority passengers may bring 55x40x20 cm in the overhead.

easyJet allows one carry-on bag up to 56x45x25 cm and 15 kg for cabin bag holders. The base fare includes this allowance — a distinction from Ryanair where priority purchase is required for overhead locker access.

Airport Profiles

Madrid Barajas (MAD)

Barajas is Spain's largest and busiest airport, operated across four terminals. Terminal 4 (T4) handles Iberia, Iberia Express, and Vueling mainline routes and is widely regarded as one of the best-designed airport terminals in Europe — spacious, efficient, and easy to navigate.

Terminals 1, 2, and 3 handle other carriers including budget airlines. Security at all terminals is professional and consistent.

Barcelona El Prat (BCN)

Barcelona has a more complex terminal layout. T1 handles full-service carriers; Terminal B (sometimes confusingly still called T2B) handles Ryanair; T1 handles easyJet. Travellers mixing airlines across a trip need to confirm which terminal each flight uses.

Security at T1 is efficient. Terminal B can be slower during summer peaks. T1 and T2 are connected by a free shuttle bus.

Lisbon Humberto Delgado (LIS)

Lisbon's airport underwent significant modernisation in recent years. The terminal is compact but functional, with security lanes that generally move quickly. The airport is close to the city centre — approximately 7 km — and well-served by metro, making it excellent for carry-on only travellers who want to go straight to the city.

Porto Francisco Sa Carneiro (OPO)

Porto is a small, pleasant airport with straightforward security and a manageable terminal layout. It is one of the easier Portuguese airports for carry-on only arrivals. The city centre is reachable by metro directly from the airport, with no need for taxis or transfers.

Frequently asked questions

What is Iberia's carry-on size and weight limit?

Iberia allows one cabin bag up to 56x45x25 cm and 10 kg on Economy and above, plus one personal item. The 10 kg limit is among the more generous on European short-haul routes.

What is TAP Portugal's carry-on allowance?

TAP Portugal allows one carry-on bag up to 55x40x20 cm and 8 kg on Economy class. The 20 cm depth is slightly less than many European competitors, so check that your bag fits before flying TAP.

Does Ryanair use a different terminal at Barcelona airport?

Yes. Ryanair operates from Terminal B at Barcelona El Prat, while easyJet uses Terminal A. Most full-service carriers use the main T1 terminal. Check your terminal carefully before travelling — they are not connected inside the airport.

What is Vueling's carry-on policy?

Vueling allows one carry-on bag up to 10 kg and 55x40x20 cm on most fares. The base Lite fare includes only a personal item under the seat. Carry-on access requires Optima fare or a paid upgrade.

Is Porto airport easy for carry-on travellers?

Yes. Porto Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport is compact and efficient. Security is fast, and the terminal is straightforward to navigate. It is one of the more pleasant smaller airports in Southern Europe.

What is Air Europa's carry-on allowance?

Air Europa allows one cabin bag up to 55x40x20 cm and 10 kg. The depth limit of 20 cm is shared with TAP Portugal and is worth checking against your specific bag's dimensions.
