Garuda Indonesia Checked Baggage: Fees, Limits & Free Bags

Garuda Indonesia checked bag allowances by fare and route, GarudaMiles status benefits, SkyTeam Elite perks, domestic Indonesia rules, and overweight fees.

Garuda Indonesia Checked Baggage: Fees, Limits & Free Bags

Garuda Indonesia is Indonesia's national flag carrier, operating from its primary hub at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta — one of Southeast Asia's busiest airports. Garuda connects Jakarta to more than 90 domestic destinations across Indonesia's vast archipelago and operates international routes to Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Australia. Garuda is a member of SkyTeam, providing additional baggage benefits for SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus members.

Indonesia's geography — more than 17,000 islands — makes domestic air travel essential, and Garuda operates a dense domestic network connecting Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, Lombok, Bali, and hundreds of smaller routes. Garuda's domestic and international baggage policies differ, which is important for travelers combining international arrival with domestic Indonesian connections.

Garuda Indonesia Baggage Allowance System

Garuda uses a weight-based system for checked baggage, not a piece-based system. This means the total checked baggage weight allowed — not the number of bags — is the binding limit. You can spread that weight across multiple bags as long as no single bag exceeds the size limit and no individual bag is overweight.

Cabin / FareInternationalDomestic Indonesia
Economy (standard)23 kg total20 kg total
Economy (select fares)30 kg total20 kg total
Executive Class (Business)40 kg total30 kg total

The weight-based approach means a traveler with a 23 kg international Economy allowance could check two bags (for example, 12 kg and 11 kg) as long as the total does not exceed 23 kg and neither individual bag is overweight per bag limit.

International Route Baggage Allowances

On Garuda's international routes from Jakarta and Bali (DPS) to destinations in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and Europe:

Economy Class:

  • Standard fare: 23 kg checked baggage (weight-based, total across all checked bags)
  • Select promoted fares: 30 kg
  • Each individual bag must not weigh more than 32 kg

Executive Class (Business):

  • 40 kg checked baggage (weight-based total)
  • Maximum 32 kg per individual bag
  • Priority baggage handling

Garuda's international Economy allowance of 23 kg is standard for the region. The 30 kg option on select fares makes Garuda relatively generous among Southeast Asian full-service carriers.

Domestic Indonesia Routes: 20 kg Limit

Garuda's domestic Indonesia routes — covering destinations like Bali (DPS), Lombok (LOP), Surabaya (SUB), Yogyakarta (JOG), Makassar (UPG), Medan (KNO/MES), and many more — carry a lower baggage allowance than international routes:

Economy Class domestic: 20 kg total checked baggage (weight-based) Executive Class domestic: 30 kg total checked baggage

This 20 kg limit applies on domestic segments even when your overall journey starts internationally. If you arrive in Jakarta on a Garuda international flight (23 kg allowance) and connect to a Garuda domestic flight to Bali on the same ticket, the domestic segment's allowance applies to that leg unless your ticket is a single through-booking — in which case your international allowance may extend to the domestic segment. Clarify this at check-in or when booking if you are transferring from international to domestic on the same day.

Lombok and Bali Travel Tips

Bali (DPS) and Lombok (LOP) are among Garuda's most popular domestic destinations, and both airports handle significant tourist traffic:

  • Garuda operates multiple daily Garuda Indonesia and Garuda Explore (formerly Citilink parent) flights from Jakarta (CGK) and Surabaya (SUB) to Bali.
  • Lombok Praya Airport (LOP) serves Lombok from Jakarta with a subset of Garuda's domestic schedule.
  • The 20 kg domestic baggage limit applies on these leisure routes. For surfers, divers, and other equipment-heavy travelers, purchasing excess baggage in advance is recommended.
  • Oversize and sports equipment (surfboards, dive bags, bicycle boxes) are accepted as special baggage on Garuda domestic routes — contact Garuda in advance for special equipment handling and fees.

GarudaMiles Frequent Flyer Baggage Benefits

GarudaMiles is Garuda Indonesia's loyalty program. Elite tier members receive higher checked baggage allowances than their base fare provides:

GarudaMiles TierExtra Baggage Allowance
Silver+5 kg on domestic and international
Gold+10 kg on domestic and international
Platinum+20 kg on domestic and international

These increases are additive to the base fare allowance. A GarudaMiles Gold member on a standard international Economy ticket would receive 23 kg + 10 kg = 33 kg total checked baggage allowance. A Platinum member on the same fare would receive 43 kg total — enough for very heavy packing without overweight fees.

GarudaMiles tier benefits apply when traveling on Garuda-operated flights (GA flight numbers). Baggage benefits on SkyTeam partner flights vary by partner.

SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus Baggage Benefits

As a SkyTeam member, Garuda Indonesia recognizes SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus status from other SkyTeam carriers including Air France, KLM, Delta, Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines, and others.

SkyTeam Elite (equivalent to Garuda Gold): SkyTeam Elite members receive additional checked baggage in line with Garuda Gold tier when flying Garuda Indonesia flights.

SkyTeam Elite Plus (equivalent to Garuda Platinum): SkyTeam Elite Plus members receive the Garuda Platinum baggage benefit when flying Garuda Indonesia flights.

This is valuable for Delta Medallion members, Air France/KLM Flying Blue Elite Plus members, and Korean Air Skypass Morning Calm Premium members traveling to Indonesia — their status provides meaningful extra baggage on Garuda domestic and international routes.

Overweight and Oversized Baggage Fees

Garuda charges for bags that exceed the allowed weight or size limits:

Overweight fees (per kg above the allowance):

  • International routes: approximately USD $8–$15 per excess kg, depending on route
  • Domestic routes: approximately IDR 30,000–50,000 per excess kg (varies by route)

Overweight is calculated on the total weight above your allowed allowance, not per bag. If you have a 23 kg allowance and check bags totaling 27 kg, you pay for 4 kg of excess — not for one "overweight bag."

Per-bag weight maximum: Regardless of your total allowance, no individual bag may exceed 32 kg. A bag over 32 kg must be split or shipped as cargo.

Oversize fees: Bags exceeding 158 linear cm (length + width + height) are assessed an oversize fee and handled as special baggage. Some airports may not accept oversized bags at the standard counter — check in advance for large items.

Soekarno-Hatta Hub (CGK) Baggage Handling

Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta is a large, busy hub with multiple terminals. Garuda Indonesia typically operates from Terminal 3 (the newer terminal). Key points:

  • Garuda's check-in opens several hours before departure and closes 45 minutes before departure for domestic flights, 60 minutes for international.
  • Baggage carousels in Terminal 3 are generally efficient for Garuda flights.
  • If connecting from Garuda international into a Garuda domestic flight at CGK on the same ticket, bags are typically transferred automatically without requiring reclaim. Allow at least 90 minutes for international-to-domestic connections at CGK.
  • Garuda's Express Check-In counters (for GarudaMiles Gold and Platinum) are separated from standard Economy check-in.

How to Minimize Garuda Baggage Fees

1. Use the weight-based system strategically. Unlike piece-based systems, you can check multiple lighter bags as long as the total weight stays within the allowance. A 23 kg allowance could be two bags at 11.5 kg each — both well under the per-bag 32 kg maximum.

2. Earn GarudaMiles Gold or Platinum for the extra kilograms. The +10 kg and +20 kg additions are proportionally more valuable on domestic routes where the base allowance is only 20 kg.

3. Hold SkyTeam Elite Plus for international Garuda travel. Delta Medallion Gold, Air France Platinum, or Korean Air Morning Calm Premium members traveling on Garuda international routes receive Platinum-level bag benefits — up to 43 kg total — without any Garuda-specific status.

4. Book domestic connections on the same Garuda ticket as your international flight. A single Garuda ticket covering the international and domestic segments gives you the best chance of the international allowance flowing through to the domestic leg.

5. Pre-purchase excess baggage online for domestic routes. Garuda's website offers excess baggage purchases at lower rates than airport-counter excess fees. For leisure travel to Bali or Lombok with gear, online pre-purchase is the smart option.

6. Weigh before you pack for domestic legs. The 20 kg domestic limit is noticeably lower than the 23 kg international limit, and the per-kg excess fees add up quickly if you are over by even a few kilograms.

Garuda Indonesia vs. Batik Air and Lion Air: Baggage Comparison

Garuda is Indonesia's premium full-service carrier, and its baggage inclusions reflect that positioning:

Garuda's SkyTeam membership and GarudaMiles program are clear differentiators for frequent international travelers. Budget carriers like Lion Air and AirAsia, which also serve Indonesia extensively, have different piece-based baggage systems with fees for every checked bag regardless of fare.

Summary: Garuda Indonesia Checked Baggage at a Glance

Garuda Indonesia uses a weight-based baggage system. International Economy fares include 23 kg (some select fares 30 kg); domestic Indonesian Economy routes include 20 kg. Business Class allows 40 kg internationally and 30 kg domestically. GarudaMiles Silver adds 5 kg, Gold adds 10 kg, and Platinum adds 20 kg to the base allowance. SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus members receive equivalent Garuda Gold and Platinum benefits. Overweight is charged per kg above the allowance at approximately USD $8–$15 on international routes. No individual bag may exceed 32 kg. Connections through Soekarno-Hatta on a single Garuda ticket generally allow through-check of baggage.
