JetBlue Checked Baggage Rules: Fees, Limits & Mosaic Benefits

JetBlue checked bag fees by fare family, Mosaic status benefits, overweight fee structure, and tips for domestic and transatlantic routes.

JetBlue Checked Baggage: Why Fare Type Matters

JetBlue's checked baggage policy is tied directly to the fare you purchase. Unlike Southwest (two bags free for everyone) and unlike ultra-low-cost carriers (bags always cost extra), JetBlue sits in the middle — some fares include a free bag, others don't. Getting this wrong at booking costs $35–$45 per bag, per flight direction.

Understanding JetBlue's fare family structure before you book is the most valuable thing you can do to control your baggage costs.

JetBlue Fare Families and Checked Bag Allowances

JetBlue sells tickets in five main fare families. Each has a distinct checked baggage policy.

FareFirst BagSecond Bag
Blue (basic economy)$35$45
Blue Plus1 free$45
Blue Extra2 freeIncluded
Mint (business class)2 freeIncluded
Blue Refundable1 free$45

Blue Fare (Basic Economy)

The Blue fare is JetBlue's entry-level product. It includes a personal item and one carry-on bag but no free checked bags. You pay $35 for your first checked bag and $45 for your second. These fees apply each way — a round trip with one checked bag on Blue fares costs $70 in bag fees alone.

Blue fare passengers sit in standard assigned seats and receive JetBlue's Fly-Fi Wi-Fi (free on most routes) and complimentary snacks and beverages. The baggage policy is where Blue cuts costs relative to Plus and Extra.

Blue Plus Fare

Blue Plus includes one free checked bag (up to 50 lbs / 23 kg). The second checked bag costs $45. Blue Plus also includes a same-day change option and additional TrueBlue points earning. For travelers who check one bag regularly, the fare premium over Blue often pays for itself in avoided bag fees.

Blue Extra Fare

Blue Extra includes two free checked bags, same-day standby, a change fee waiver, and the highest TrueBlue points multiplier among economy fares. For travelers checking two bags round trip, Blue Extra's included bags can offset most or all of the fare premium over Blue Plus.

Mint Fare (Business Class)

JetBlue's Mint business class cabin (available on transcontinental and select international routes) includes two free checked bags up to 50 lbs each. Mint passengers also receive priority boarding, lie-flat seats, premium dining, and a dedicated check-in area.

Standard Weight and Size Limits

Regardless of fare, JetBlue's standard checked baggage limits apply:

  • Weight: 50 lbs (23 kg) maximum per bag
  • Size: 62 linear inches (length + width + height) maximum per bag

Bags exceeding these limits incur overweight or oversize fees.

Overweight and Oversize Fees

JetBlue's overweight fees are among the highest of U.S. carriers — particularly for bags in the 51–70 lb range.

Overweight Fees

WeightFee Per Bag (Each Way)
51–70 lbs (23–32 kg)$150
71–100 lbs (32–45 kg)$200
Over 100 lbs (45+ kg)Not accepted

The $150 fee for bags in the 51–70 lb range is notably steep. A bag that's 52 lbs on a round trip incurs $300 in overweight fees — far more than the bag itself likely cost. Weigh your bags before leaving home.

Oversize Fees

SizeFee Per Bag (Each Way)
Over 62 linear inches$150

Overweight and oversize fees stack: a bag that is both over 50 lbs and over 62 linear inches incurs both the overweight and oversize charges.

Mosaic Elite Status and Checked Baggage Benefits

JetBlue's TrueBlue Mosaic program has four tiers: Mosaic 1, Mosaic 2, Mosaic 3, and Mosaic 4. Each tier provides progressively better checked baggage benefits.

Mosaic 1

  • First checked bag free on any JetBlue fare (including Blue basic economy)
  • Saves $35 per bag per direction vs. Blue fare

Mosaic 2

  • First and second checked bags free on any JetBlue fare
  • Effectively brings all fare families to Blue Extra or better for baggage purposes

Mosaic 3

  • First and second checked bags free
  • Additional priority services and upgrade benefits

Mosaic 4

  • First and second checked bags free
  • Highest tier benefits including companion upgrades and dedicated support

Key nuance: Mosaic free bag benefits apply to the Mosaic member's reservation only. Traveling companions on the same booking do not receive Mosaic baggage benefits unless they themselves hold Mosaic status. Families traveling together on a Blue fare, where only one adult has Mosaic, will still pay for the non-Mosaic travelers' bags.

JetBlue Credit Cards and Checked Bag Benefits

JetBlue offers co-branded credit cards through Barclays. The JetBlue Plus Card and JetBlue Business Card provide:

  • First checked bag free for the primary cardholder and up to three companions on the same reservation (when the JetBlue card is used to purchase the ticket)
  • 10% TrueBlue point bonus on redemptions
  • 6x points on JetBlue purchases

For families or groups where one person holds the JetBlue Plus Card, the free first-bag benefit extends to up to three companions — unlike Mosaic status benefits, which don't extend to companions. Using the Plus Card to book a family's tickets can save $140+ round trip on a family of four checking one bag each.

JetBlue International Routes and Checked Baggage

JetBlue's international routes (primarily to the Caribbean, Latin America, and transatlantic routes to the UK and Europe) follow different allowance policies on some itineraries.

Caribbean and Latin America

Domestic fare family rules generally apply on Caribbean and Latin American routes. Blue fare passengers pay for all checked bags; Blue Plus includes one free bag; Blue Extra includes two.

Transatlantic Routes (London Gatwick, Amsterdam, Paris CDG)

JetBlue's transatlantic Mint routes and economy routes to Europe follow international baggage policies:

  • Economy (Blue/Blue Plus/Blue Extra): The same fare-family rules apply, with Blue Extra including two free bags
  • Mint (transatlantic): Two free checked bags up to 70 lbs (32 kg) each — a higher weight allowance than domestic Mint routes

The increased weight limit on international Mint is aligned with long-haul industry norms.

Sports Equipment and Special Items

Golf Equipment

Golf bags are accepted as checked baggage and count as one item. JetBlue charges the standard first or second bag fee (or it's included if your fare/status covers it). Oversize fees apply if the golf case exceeds 62 linear inches — most hard-sided golf travel cases do. Weight charges apply over 50 lbs.

Skiing and Snowboarding Equipment

Ski bags (skis/poles) and snowboard bags each count as one item of checked baggage. Standard fare/status allowances apply. Most ski bags exceed 62 linear inches; the $150 oversize fee will typically apply unless your ski bag is compact enough to measure under the limit.

Bicycles

Bicycles must be boxed and are treated as oversize items. The $150 oversize fee applies. The bicycle counts as one of your checked bags.

Surfboards and Large Sports Items

Items that cannot be boxed to fit within 62 linear inches are assessed the $150 oversize fee and count as one checked bag item.

Firearms

Unloaded firearms in locked, hard-sided cases are accepted. Passengers must declare firearms at check-in. TSA and federal regulations apply.

Practical Advice for JetBlue Bag Fees

Compare total trip cost, not just the ticket price. A Blue fare at $30 less than Blue Plus doesn't save you money if you're checking one bag. Do the math before clicking "book."

The Blue Plus upsell is often worth it. On JetBlue's website and app, the Blue Plus upgrade from Blue is frequently in the $20–$40 range per direction — sometimes less than the $35 first-bag fee alone. Check the fare difference before booking.

Weigh obsessively. The $150 overweight fee for 51–70 lbs bags is one of the highest in the industry. A 52-lb bag costs as much in overweight fees as three standard first-bag fees on competitors.

Book with your JetBlue Plus Card. If you hold the card and have companions traveling, the free-first-bag benefit extending to three companions is the card's most immediately valuable perk for family travelers.

TrueBlue points don't offset bag fees directly. Points can be redeemed for flights but not applied to baggage fee payments at check-in.

JetBlue Checked Baggage vs. Competitors

AirlineFirst BagSecond BagOverweight (51–70 lbs)
JetBlue Blue$35$45$150
American Airlines$35$45$100
Delta Air Lines$35$45$100
United Airlines$35$45$100
Southwest AirlinesFreeFree$75

JetBlue's overweight fee of $150 is significantly higher than the $100 charged by American, Delta, and United for the same weight range. This is the single most important JetBlue baggage rule to know if you're traveling with heavy bags.

Bottom Line

JetBlue's checked baggage policy rewards passengers who choose higher fare families or hold Mosaic elite status. Blue fare travelers pay for every bag ($35 first, $45 second). Blue Plus includes one free bag. Blue Extra and Mint include two free bags. Overweight fees — especially the $150 charge for bags between 51 and 70 lbs — are the most important cost to avoid. Factor in your fare family and baggage needs together when comparing fares, and consider the JetBlue Plus Card if you travel with companions who would otherwise pay per bag.
