SkyTeam Carry-On Rules: Status & Allowance Guide
SkyTeam carry-on rules for Air France, KLM, Delta, Korean Air, Aeroméxico, China Eastern, and 15 other members. What Elite Plus status gets you.
SkyTeam is the second-largest airline alliance with 19 member airlines, including Delta, Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Aeroméxico, China Eastern, China Southern, Vietnam Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Kenya Airways, Middle East Airlines, Saudia, Czech Airlines, TAROM, ITA Airways, XiamenAir, Xiamen, Starlux Airlines, and WestJet (associate member).
SkyTeam operates two elite status tiers: SkyTeam Elite and SkyTeam Elite Plus. For carry-on purposes, the key tier is Elite Plus — the minimum level at which most partner airlines extend meaningful carry-on benefits.
SkyTeam Status Structure
SkyTeam Elite — Entry-level recognition. Equivalent to Delta Silver Medallion, Air France/KLM Flying Blue Silver, Korean Air Skypass Morning Calm. Benefits: priority check-in, seat selection, some boarding priority. No significant extra carry-on allowance.
SkyTeam Elite Plus — Top tier recognition. Equivalent to Delta Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Medallion; Air France/KLM Flying Blue Gold, Platinum, and Ultimate; Korean Air Skypass Morning Calm Premium and Million Miler; China Eastern Elite Plus. Benefits: business class check-in, lounge access, extra checked baggage, priority boarding, and in many cases extra carry-on allowance.
The Operating Carrier Principle
SkyTeam follows the same operating carrier principle as other alliances. When you fly on a SkyTeam partner, the operating airline applies their own Elite Plus benefit table. Your home airline's specific allowance doesn't transfer — the tier does.
Example: Delta Diamond Medallion (SkyTeam Elite Plus) flying on Air France. Air France recognizes you as Elite Plus and applies their own Elite Plus carry-on benefit — an additional 12 kg on top of the standard cabin baggage allowance for Air France economy passengers.
Airline-by-Airline Carry-On Rules
Delta Air Lines: Economy standard is 1 carry-on + 1 personal item, no weight limit on domestic US flights. Internationally, weight limits apply (10 kg on some routes). Delta Silver and above board in Comfort+ Zone. Gold and above board in Zone 1 (first group). No additional carry-on pieces for status — priority boarding is the mechanism. Delta Basic Economy restricts passengers to personal item only with no carry-on bag in the overhead bin.
Air France: Economy standard is 12 kg (1 piece + 1 personal item up to 5 kg). Elite Plus members receive an additional 12 kg carry-on allowance (total 24 kg) in economy on most routes. Air France is one of the more generous alliance carriers for Elite Plus carry-on specifically. Enforcement at Charles de Gaulle can be spotty but has tightened on transatlantic routes.
KLM: Economy standard is 12 kg (1 piece + 1 personal item up to 5 kg). Like Air France (they share Flying Blue), Elite Plus gets an additional 12 kg. Enforcement at Amsterdam Schiphol is moderate. KLM and Air France share identical carry-on policies as part of the same group.
Korean Air: Economy standard is 10 kg (1 piece). SkyTeam Elite Plus members receive an additional 10 kg carry-on allowance (20 kg total). Korean Air's carry-on weight is weighed consistently at Incheon Airport. The Elite Plus benefit is meaningful here because the base limit is relatively tight.
China Eastern: Economy standard is 5 kg (1 piece under 20x30x40 cm) for basic economy, 10 kg for economy. Elite Plus receives an additional piece. China Eastern enforces weight at Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao and at major Chinese secondary hubs.
China Southern: Economy standard is 10 kg. Elite Plus receives an additional 10 kg. One of the more generous Chinese carriers for status members on carry-on specifically.
Aeroméxico: Economy standard is 10 kg (1 piece). Elite Plus receives priority boarding and an additional piece on select routes. Carry-on enforcement at Mexico City Benito Juárez is variable but has increased on US-bound routes since 2024.
Vietnam Airlines: Economy standard is 7 kg. Elite Plus receives an additional 3–5 kg on some routes. Priority boarding is the more reliable benefit.
Garuda Indonesia: Economy standard is 7 kg. Elite Plus members get priority boarding and an additional 3 kg. Enforcement at Soekarno–Hatta in Jakarta has tightened for international departures.
Kenya Airways: Economy standard is 7 kg. Elite Plus receives priority boarding and lounge access but carry-on allowance rarely increases beyond the standard.
ITA Airways (formerly Alitalia): Economy standard is 8 kg. Elite Plus receives priority boarding and additional checked baggage. Carry-on allowance itself doesn't increase significantly at Elite Plus on ITA.
Saudia: Economy standard is 7 kg. Elite Plus receives priority boarding and additional checked bags. Carry-on weight enforcement is strict at Riyadh and Jeddah regardless of status.
WestJet (Associate Member): Economy standard is 10 kg (Canada). WestJet's alliance participation is limited — Elite Plus recognition applies primarily to priority boarding and not extended carry-on allowances.
TAROM: Economy standard is 8 kg. Elite Plus receives priority boarding. Carry-on allowance doesn't increase for status on this carrier.
Flying Blue and the Air France/KLM Ecosystem
Flying Blue is the shared frequent flyer program for Air France and KLM. It's the most important SkyTeam program for European-based travelers. The tiers:
- Flying Blue Explorer: Entry tier
- Flying Blue Silver: SkyTeam Elite
- Flying Blue Gold: SkyTeam Elite Plus
- Flying Blue Platinum: SkyTeam Elite Plus
- Flying Blue Ultimate: SkyTeam Elite Plus (highest)
For carry-on purposes, Gold and above (all Elite Plus tiers) receive the additional 12 kg carry-on allowance on Air France and KLM-operated flights. The benefit is the same across Gold, Platinum, and Ultimate — the tiers differ mainly in lounge access and checked bag allowances.
Delta's Domestic Reality
Delta Medallion status on Delta-operated flights has a specific carry-on situation worth explaining. Because US domestic flights don't enforce carry-on weight limits, the "extra carry-on weight" benefit is irrelevant domestically. What Delta status gives you is:
- Boarding priority (Zone 1 for Gold, Platinum, Diamond) that ensures you board first and find bin space
- Waived Basic Economy bag restrictions at Gold and above — you can put your carry-on overhead even on a Basic Economy ticket if you have status
- Upgrade opportunity to First Class which has more overhead bin space per passenger
On Delta international flights where weight limits apply (typically 10 kg), Elite Plus benefits may add additional carry-on weight depending on the route and fare class.
Practical Advice for SkyTeam Travelers
For Air France/KLM routes: The Flying Blue Elite Plus carry-on benefit is the most consistently applied extra carry-on allowance in the alliance. If you're carrying a heavier cabin bag, Flying Blue Gold (reachable with a mid-range number of annual flights) provides a meaningful buffer.
For Asian routes via Korean Air or China Southern: Elite Plus carry-on benefits are most valuable here because economy base limits are lowest (7–10 kg) and enforcement is strictest.
For Delta domestic: Don't plan around weight-based benefits. Plan around boarding position. Delta's zone boarding system strongly rewards status for carry-on purposes.
Verify at booking: Add your SkyTeam program number to every partner booking. Status that isn't visible in your booking can't be honored at the gate, and calling to add it the night before departure is stressful.
Frequently asked questions
